Union Steamship °osa : rs“> »». to, wsnwten and Wosi Coast. Passengers —Eighty exc nr.-iomsta. P. Cunningham and Co., agents. , , Cleared— January 4. Wild Wavo, barque, 237 tons, Sim, for Hobart. W. H. Hargreaves, agent. The ship Phasis. from Calcutta, whose arrival baa been announced, is drawing about 20ft 6m of water. Yet with that moderate draught it was deemed advisable to come up to this port to lighten her before going into Pott Chalmers. As is well known, it is not a remarkable instance m the shipping news at this port for vessels of 2ft greater draught than that of the Phasis to discharge and load here without even stirring up the soft mud on being towed cither in or out. It seems a pity that ships of the Phasis draught have to avoid going to Port Chalmers, but it is refreshing to ship underwriters to know that there 'is a port in the Middle Island at which -cargoes can be landed and sent, either overland or by coasting vessels, at such a cost to the ships aa will offset the disadvantages which the bar entrance at Port Chalmers necessarily entails.
