SCHOOL TREATS.
Both the Oxford terrace and Sydenham Baptist Sunday schools held their annual treat on Monday last. The scholars and teachers were assembled at the school at nine o'clock,, and marched to Cathedral square. The tram being in readiness the party proceeded to the grounds near Papauui, kindly lent by Mr Duncan. On arriving at the destination the number of scholars, including teachers, was 420. The paddock was round very suitable for the occasion, as there was plenty of room for cricket, which was indulged in by the senior scholars. After dinner games were entered into with much zest. During the afternoon about 250 of the children’s parents arrived, and seemed to enjoy ths games with the children. A large number of toys were distributed during the afternoon. Aftertea the various games were still entered into with delight. At the time fixed for departure, seven o’clock, all proceeded back to town by the tram, having thoroughly enjoyed the day’s recreation. The annual treat in connection with the Free Methodist Sunday school, Colombo road, was held on Monday. About 10 a.m. the scholars and teschere walked to a paddock on the estate of Mr Packer, Colombo road south, and wore joined in the afternoon by parents and irieuds, making in all upwards c£ 250. After spending a morn enjoyable day they gathered in front of Mr Packer’s residence. That gentleman, with Mrs Packer, ] kindly led the visitors around the gardens. The children sang several hymns, and the Rev. A. Peters, on behalf of the tchooi, thanked Mr Packer, and three cheers were given for him and Mrs Parker for their kindness in granting the r.so of a paddock, which wee all that could be desired. On Monday the children of the Ashburton Wesleyan Sunday-echool bad a pleasant dayin a paddock kindly lent by Mr Hocder. On Monday the annual treat cf the Ashburton Presbyterian school was given, 150 scholars, under Mr A. Orr's supervision, assembling on the paddock adjoining the manse. The success of the picnio was larg-ly due to the kind attention of the Rfv. A. M. Beattie, Mr H. J. Weeks, end Mcsdatrea Beattie, Rutherford, and other ladies. Five pounds worth of prizes were distributed among the little folk. The Rev. Mr Bec.ttie, on behalf of the choir and the congregation, presented Mr and Mrs Stott with a marble time-piece, in recognition of Mr Stott’s presiding at the church organ during the last throe years.
