A stowaway discovered on board the mail steamer Australia, from Sydney, was landed at Quarantine Station, and will have to remain there sixteen days. Conference with S- H- Parkes. The Hon. Mr Whitaker had an interview with Sir Henry Parkes on the mail steamer relative to his mission to America on behalf of New South Wales and this colony. Burglars Abroad. During the holiday yesterday several residences at Kemnera were burglariously entered daring the absence of the occupants. Incessant rain and a thunderstorm in the afternoon completely spoiled the holiday and Sunday school excursions. Sporting. Entries for the Auckland Derby, ISBI, close on Friday next at 8 p.m,; also, at the same time, now yearlings for the Mares’ Produce Stakes at the autumn meeting, 1885. Death by Drowning. William Kemp, belonging to the cut,ter Mary Ann, was drowned at Mahurangi by the capsize of a sailing boat at a picnic. The Maori King at the Sports. At the sports of the public school at Alexandra, on the banks of the Panui, Tawhaio was present, and actively assisted at the sports.
NELSON, January 3, New R. C. Church. The foundation stone of the new St. Mary’s Church was laid on Sunday by Bishop Redwood, assisted by the Rev. Fathers Garin, O’Mally, and Mahoney. There was a very large concourse of people present. A suitable address was presented to his Lordship, reference being made therein to the fact that the stone would occupy the spot on which the Bishop determined in his own mind to become a priest. A silver trowel, suitably inscribed, was also presented to his Lordship. The Bishop delivered an excellent address, and referred to his having commenced Lis etudies at St. Mary’s under the Yen, Father Gavin, who had been their pastor for thirly-one years. The band of the Wellington City Quardu performed sacred selections during the ceremony, WELLINGTON. Jai.uory 3. Railway Extension. The following tenders were received for the Permanent Way Contract No. 2, Weka Paso section, Hnrunui-Waitaki railway : —Accepted —Jessie Coates, Palmerston South, £2727. Declined —T. Taylor, Christchurch, £3IBB ; Robert Johnston, Waikari, £4418, The ’Frisco Mails. The s.s. Zealandia with the London mails of the Ist ult., left San Francisco for Auckland on Tuesday, 20th December, throe days later than timetable date. The s.s. City of Sydney with the December colonial made, arrived at San Francisco on the 27ch ult, two days before timetable date. The Governor. His Excellency the Governor and firmly returned from Christchurch at 5 o'clock this evening. The Dangers of Tree Falling. A sad accident occurred at Maatcrton this afternoon. A bookseller, named Chir.chcn, took his nephew, named Alfred Bindon, to see him fall a small tree. The tree fell cn the boy, who, in running for safety, pot in the most dangerous position. He was much bruised, and it is supposed that his skull it fractured. There is no hopo of his recovery. WESTPORT, January 3, MiningThe reefs at Cascade Creek (Fuller River), Waimangaroa, and Mokitinui are attracting attention. The prospects are good, and many applications for leases have been msde. Interests are changing bauds at good prices. Seven ounces of stone from the Golden Crown, Mikitinui, crushed by Mr John Campbell to-day, yielded two grains of gold. TIM ABU, January 3. Want of Caution. A man named John Lawrie, while standing on the edge of the cliff, to the north of Timaru, to-day, was precipitated to the rocks beneath through the earth giving way. He was seriously injured, and died shortly after his arrival at the hospital. OAMARU. January 3. The Harbor Board. Mr George Sumpter was re-elected chairman of the Harbor Board to-day. The Sports. The Caledonian sports were well attended to-day. During the two days a lorger number of persons have attended the sports than in any previous year. Ihe majority of the oveate were well contorted.

A companion searching for him fourd 'him lying ] dead in the water. Fire. A fire at Cromwell destroyed a hater’s shop, which was insured with the stock in the National for £6OO. The Railway AccidsntAt the inquest held on your g Wood cock, who was killed by the train accident at Ehihiku, a verdict of “Accidental death” was returned. A rider was added calling the attention of the authorities to a gap in the fence on the line at the spot. Subscriptions are being raised for Mrs Woodcock, the mother of deceased. An Apparent HoaxA bottle was found on Sunday lest on the Waikouaiti beach, about thirty miles from Dunedin, containing a scrap of paper, on which was written in lead pencil— 11 Tuesday, December 27th, 1831. Please send assistance as soon as possible. Shipwreck about eighty mileu off Oape Saunders. Gad help us, captain. Whoever finds this let hira send to headquarters.” The police bore only got it to-night. As no names are given it nay turn, out to be a hoax. FireGibson’s starch and corn flour factory, in Harbor terrace, was burned down this afternoon. The origin of the fire is not known. The machinery and plant were insured in the South British for £BOO, but Mr Gibson estimates his loss at £I2OO over that turn. The building belonged to Mr McDonald. It was insured for £SOO in the Standard. The place burnt very fiercely. The brigade saved the adjoining hotel. INVEEOABGILL, January 3. The Sports. The Caledonian Society’s games were a great success, about 6000 being present cn the first day. Gaelic SocietyAt a large and enthusiastic meeting of Highlanders last evening, the Gaelic Society of Southland was formed, and oSce-bearera elected. Fatal Accident at the Eega’ta. A sad accident happened at ths Bluff regatta to-day. The sea being very lumpy three outriggers capsized, with the result that one man, Mr A. Robertson, was drowned.
