AUSTRALIA.

[belter's telegrams.] MELBOURNE, January 4. The Cable Tariff The “ Argus ” to-day publishes a leading article on the subject of the cable tariff between Australia and New Zealand. It approves of the action of thd Melbourne Chamber of Oommerco in endeavouring to obtain a redaction of the rates on the New Zealand cable, and condemns the existing anomaly under which the tariff is greater from, than it is to Australia. The “ Argus ” proposes that the colonies should act jointly to increase the subsidy paid to the Eastern Extension Telegraph Company, with a view to obtain a reduction of the tariffs.
