[ESUTEE’S TELEGRAMS.] MELBOURNE, January 2. Sporting. The New Year’s Day meeting of tho Victoria Racing Club took place to-day at Flemington. The weather was cool bat unsettled. The racing was good. The Normanby Stakes were won by Navigator, with Solitude second and Boolka third. The Midsummer Handicap was won by Belladrum, Guinea second, Swiveller third. For the Champion Stakes six horses started —namely, Wellington, Santa Claus, Commotion, Coriolanus, Wheatear and Royal Maid. Commotion and Santa Clans led for tho first mile and a half, but on nearing home Coriolanus came up, and a grand race took place up the straight between Commotion, Wellington, and Coriolanus. The latter, however, passed the post a length in advance of Commotion, and Wellington was third. Time —smin 40sec. The English Eleven. The cricket match between the All England Eleven and a combined eleven of Australia was resumed to-day, and when the stumps were drawn tho latter had put together in the first innings 277 runs for the loss of only six wickets, as against 294 of tho Englishmen’s first innings. Horan was not out for 106, Murdoch scored 39, Bannerman 38, and Gifiren 30. The weather to day was fine, but cold, and the attendance was again very largo. The revenue of New South Wales for the past year amounted to £6,714,000, being an increase of £1,802,000 compared with 1880. Tho land revenue amounted to £2,821,000 ; railways earned £1,460,000, and the Post-office £330,000, Increases are shown in the income from duties on spirits, tobacco, and from stamps. SmallpoxTwo fresh cases of smallpox wore reported to-day, and one death has resulted from the disease. Steamer WreckedThe Australian Steam Navigation Company’s steamship Wotonga has gone ashore at Port Macqnarrio, on tho New South Wales coast, and is expected to become a total wreck. The passengers and crow have been landed safely. Tho cause of the disaster is attributed to tho fog obscuring tho lighthouse at tho entrance of the port. ADELAIDE, January 2. Revenue ReturnsThe South Australian revenue for the past quarter amounted to £544,000, being an increase of £47,000 compared with the corresponding quarter of 1880. Tho revenue for the half-year ended 31st December was £1,124,000, an increase of £167,000 compared with the last six months of the previous year. NEW ZEALAND. to-day was a great success. The weather was beautifully fine, and fully 1500 people assembled on the ground. The greater portion was conveyed by rail, and the morning tram consisted of thirty carriages and trucks crowded with passengers. Wanganui was almost deserted. Fire. . . At six o’clock this evening a serious tiro 1 0 'irred in Eidgeway street, wbeieby the shop and dwelling house occupied by Mrs Eankin, milliner, wore completely gutted. The fire commenced in an unoccupied shop under the same roof, and rapidly spread. Owing to most of the fire brigade being out of town the water was not got on so soon as would otherwise have been tbe case, but a number of gentlemen lent willing acsistanco, and the fire was confined to the one building. The premises are tho property of Mr W. H. Watt, M H.E., and were insured, but to what extent is not yet known. Mrs Eankin’s loss must be heavy, as nothing was saved. WELLINGTON, January 2. The club has purchased 2970 eggs and 467 heads of small birds already. The Sports. There was a large attendance at the Caledonian games to-day, which were highly uuc oeesful, E. White won the maiden race, K. Thomas tho 220 yards handicap race, Oliver the 330 yards champion race, J. Mitchell the 440 yards race, Clarke the walking match, and Eraser tho half-mile handicap race.
