A large deputation waited on the Minister of Lands on the 20 tb, and represented that there was great distress amongst the settlers at Coonatta, Pinda, and other districts, and asked the Government to become mortgagees for twothirds of the valne of their property. The Minister said that the Government we.e anxious to meet the settlors by postponing their payments, bat could not become mortgagees of the selections. The " Register" believes the cauee of the distress is the selection of land unsuitable for wheat growing, and urges a prompt and Btriot investigation into the whole circumstances.
