[PBB PHBSB ASSOCIATION.! AUCKLAND, December 30. Municipal. At a meeting of the City Council an attempt was made to increase the salary of the Mayor and certain officers of the Council, but it failed. Singular Offence and Decision. Bobert Sohoolfield was charged at the Police Court with riding in a railway carriage set apart for ladies. The Magistrate, Mr McDonald, ruled that anyone on the platform of a carriage could not be said to be in the carriage, and dismissed the; case. The decision has caused some surprise. An Interesting Item of News. The schooner Winifred brings Fijian news to the 10th, but there is nothing of importance. Aquatic There were three entries for the Outrigger Champion Bace at the Mercury Bay Begatta, Carter and Floyd, of New South Wales, and Albert White, the Soulier who was beaten by Hearn. The distance was three and a-half miles. White led at the start, but was rapidly overhauled by Carter, who won as he pleased by several lengths. WELLINGTON, Daoomber 30. Crime. At the Magistrate's Court to-day, John Hargreaves, on a charge of setting fire to some farm out-buildings and other property at Waiwetu, was remanded for a week. MiningHOKITIKA, December 30. Applications have been received for 37,840 shares in the Humphrey's Gully Water-race and Goldmining Company. Out of 20,000, the number that, the Directors are empowered to allot, Auckland has been allotted 5000; Dunedin. 5275; Ohristohuroh, 2000; Hokitika, 7725. A small premium is already offered for shares. Returning Officers Safe. The Inspector of Police received a telegram from Boss to-night, stating that Allen and Beily, the two Beturning Officers, supposed to be lost down south since December 12th, are safe, and on their way to Boss,
