ST. STEPHEN’S NATIVE SCHOOL, KAIAPOI.
The ninth anniversary of the opening of this school was held on Monday last. The proceedings commenced with a children’s service in the Maori Church, at which the Eovs. Mr Inwood and G. P. Mutu officiated. At two o’clock hie Excellency, Sir Arthur Gordon, his Lordship the Bishop of Christchurch, and Mr J. Studbolme, arrived, and having inspected the gardens, adjourned to the Town Hall (in which room the show was to be held). The school children,’who were all dressed in their pretty uniform, and ranged on the platform, then sang “ God Save the Q.ucen.” After which the Bev. G. P. Mutu briefly addressed a few words of welcome to his Excellency, thanking him on behalf of the Maoris for the honor he had conferred upon them by his presence at this show. His Excellency, in reply, said that it gave him much pleasure to receive the invitation, and it was with great pleasure he had accepted it. He was very much pleased with what he had seen, and the gardens reflected great credit upon their owners. He concluded by wishing both Maoris and Europeans “ A merry Christmas and a happy New Year.” The company next proceeded to inspect the show. The following is the prize list: — OPEN CLASSES. Pot Plants—Collection of four plants, Mr Beeves 1; faschias, Mr Beeves 1; petunias, Mr Beeves 1. Fruit—Collection of gooseberries, Mrs Fluty X, Mrs Urn 2 ; currants, Te Aika 1, Harawita 2 ; raspberries, Te Aika 1. Dr. Ovenden, 10s, for bast collection of out flowers (amateur class), Mrs Hopa. Dr. Ovenden, 10s, for best collection of cut flowers (open class), Mr Beeves. Mr Leigh, one dozen rose trees, beat collection of frait (open class), Mr Beeves. Mr Leigh, one dozen rose trees, beat collection of fruit (amateur class), Mrs Urn. I Mr Leigh, six pot plants, for hand bouquet by school chi dren, Helena Beeves 1, Agnes Huria 2, Lizzy Eoberts 3. Mrs D’Auvergne, 3s for beat homemade loaf, Mrs Wilson 1. Austin and Kirk’s special prize, a garden vase. To Hira Mutu. Messrs Leigh, Sneap, and Hobbs acted as judges in tho Horticultural Show. The schoolroom was most tastefully decorated with banners, evergreens, and flowers, and reflected great credit on the master and mistress, Mr and Mrs Beeves. His Excellency and party left for Christchurch at four o’clock. In the evening a ball took place, which was largely attended.
