CHRISTCHURCH. Wednesday, December 28. (Before J. Ollivier, 8.M., and B. Westonra, J.P.] Drunkenness —For first offences, six men and tour females were fined each sj, and ordered to pay cab hire where that expense had been incurred. Geo. Tibbs, who had resisted the arresting constable, was fined 15s. Martin Warren and Bars Hansen were fined 6s, Joanna Gallagher was fined 10s, and cab hire Is. Isabella Dookie was fined ss, Michael Wheeler was fined 10s. Wilful Destbuction of Pbopbety.— Jane Paul, alias Jack, came up on remand f.-om the 27th instant, charged witfl destroying property valued at £5, the property of Ada Boyd ; and property valued at 7s 6a, belonging to W. G. Bennings. She was also charged with using obscene language in a public thoroughfare. It appeared from the evidence that in consequence of some disagreement between prisoner and the prosecutrix Bojd, who is the beeper of two brothels in Now street, prisoner, about 8 p.m., proceeded to smash the windows of both those places, and effected damage to window panes and furniture to the extent of £7 10s, using horrible language the while. She then wont to another brothel kept by Bennings in Barbadoes street, and quarreling there she was turned out, and she then broke panes of glass valued at 7s. In defence prisoner stated at Boyd’s some of the women had set on her, beat her, pished her out, and throw pepper in her eyes, Bonning, she said, hauled her out of his house by tho air of the head. For the damage done at Boyd’s she was ordered to pay £5, or in default one month’s imprisonment with hard labor ; for that done at Bennings’, to pay 7s, or forty-eight hours’ imprisonment, and for using obscene language she was fined £3, or one month’s imprisonment with hard labour.

Breach of Licensing Act —Jas. Meagher, licensee of the Springston Hotel, was charged with allowing gambling in his house. Wm. Middlemns, a clerk residing at Christchurch, deposed that on tho evening of Dec. X4th, he was staying at the hotel and saw the landlord and others playing with dice and money. He did not know what tho game was, but money passed several times on the result of tho game. The parties were not playing for drinks, though they had one drink together. Defendant admitted that he had been “shaking for drinks ” but denied that gambling for money had been going on. He was fined 4Cs, and ordered to produce his licence for the sentence to be endorsed on it.
