Tho annual meeting of tho Lower Heathcote Esotng Olub took place yesterday on the course near the Heathcote Arms. There was a oapital attendance of visitors, and the sport as a whole was very good. Beyond Messrs Hobbs and Goodwin's totalisator, there were E 520 of tho amusements equally seen on such occasions. The Handioap Hurdle Bace was the first event on the card, and for this there were only two goers, The *gent being an absentee. The district men wero very sweet on Levant, who, nfter baulking at a hurdle, won pretty comfortably from Bijou. The same mare won the next event, the District Handicap Hurdl» B»oe, after a game race with Supplejack. Mr Piper's luck was evideutly in, as he also oarried off the Maiden Plate with Besult after a very good race, in which six started. For the Cup only three came to tho start, Fleur-de-liys being scratched. Of these, Tasman was the favorito, though some few thought Chancellor oould do the business. The weight, however, was too muoh for him, and he could only finish third, though pretty olose up. Nonpareil ran Tasman hard at the finish, but was unable to stay, and Mr O'Brien's colt iron by about three-quarters of a length, Chancellor about a quarter of a length off the second horso. A protest, whioh was entered by Mr Horsford against Tasman for going inside posts, was heard by the stewards, and after taking evidence it was decided to hand the stakes to Nonpariel, the second horse. The trot was won by Polly, with fifty yards •tart, Doctor, with 450 yards, second. For the Flying Handicap Nautilus and Fleur de Lys were made the favourites. The latter won after a good raoe, pretty comfortably, Nautilus second, and Luna third. Tasman was scratched. For the Novel Bace seven came to the start, and the winner turned up in Supplejaok, Jester, who had been made a hot favourite, and who led for some distance, finishing third, Laertes second. The winner was sold for £3O, the purchaser being his owner, who had thus the satisfaction of contributing £ls so the funds. For the Con•olation there were four entries, and Mr Bichardson handicapped them thus : —Joker, SitlOlbu; Jonnie,Bit2lbsj Johnny, 6»t 71bs ; and Terror, 6st. The raoe was won by Joker. The totalisator returns were as follows, at £1 per share : Hurdle, 95 investors, dividend £2 10a ; District Hurdle Bace, 154 investors, dividend £2 18s; Maiden Plate, 148 investors, dividend £4 5s ; Cap, 227 investors, dividend £2 lis; Trot, 189 investors, dividend £6 6.; Flying Handicap, 276 investors, dividend £3 17s; Novel, 132 investors, dividend £3 19s; Consolation, 140 investors, dividend £ll6s. Mr Leaoh was an effioient clerk of the course, and Mr Dunbar presided over the scales with that eflioienoy and urbanity whioh is characteristic of him. The other officials were to the fore in the discharge of their duties. Handicap Hubdle Bace, of 45 nova ; m sovs for second horse ; about two miles, over nine flights of hurdles. Mr Piper's blk m Levant, agea, 9st (Owner) 1 Mr T. Lyford's ch m Bijou, aged, 9st 101 b (Owner) 2 Agent was scratched. Levant led at the start, and after leading to the hurdle oppositb the hotel refused, and allowed Bijou to get a long lead. Levant, however, going at a rare bat, caught Bijou at the hurdle near the saddling paddook, which they negotiated together, and a good raoe ensued home, whioh was ultimately won by Levant, who had a bit in hand at the finish. District Handicap Hubdle Bace, of 20 sovs; 5 sovs for second horse ; about one mile and a half, over seven flights of hurdles. Mr Piper's blk m Levant, aged, lOst 101 b (Owner) 1 Mr Orange's oh g Supplejack, aged, 10st41b (Turner) 2 Mr Howard's r g Glenmoro, 6 yrs, 9st (Owner) 0 Mr Lyford's ch m Bijou, aged, list 71b (Owner) 0 Mr B. Hale's br g Johnny, aged, lOst (Cornelius) 0

Supplejaok was quiokest away, after two attempts, with Levant olose up, and the rest a bit straggled. At the first hurdle Levant went to the front at a hot pace, and Johnny baulking was out of the raoe. Coming round the second time, Supplejaok and Levant wore seek and neck, and took the hurdle near the ■addling paddock together. At the far hurdle, however, Levant went away and was never headed, winning easily by three lengths. A good race ensued between Glenmore and Bijou for the barren honor of third place, resulting in a victory for the former. Maiden Plate of 30 sovs, for all borces that have not won 10 aova of public money ; weight for age. Mr Piper's b c Result, 3 yra, Bst (Durston) 1 Mr Karnshaw's b m Jinnie, aged, 9at (Thompson) 2 Mr J. Lunn's Canard, 4 yra, Oat (Cornelius) 3 Mr George's ch f Psyche, 4 yra. Jinnie led off at a hot paoo, the lot being sent away to a very bad start, with Result second, Terror third, the rest in a string. In this order they ran until paaaing the saddling paddock for the seoond time, when Beault came with a rush and took the lead, Jinnie second, Terror still third. Result inoreased his lead to about three or four lengths on the far aide of the oourae, and won comfortably by about four lengtha. Canard, who cams away in the straight, finished third. Heathcote Handicap Cup of 60 sovs, added to a, sweep of 2 sovs, to go to seoond horse ; one and a half miles and a distance. Mr D. O'Brien's b c Tasman, by St. Aubyn —Zillah, 3 yrs, 7st 31b (Hastie) 1 Mr Horaford's ch g Nonpariel, 3 yrs, 6st 91b (Smith) 2 Mr Goodman's br h Chancellor, aged. Oat 51b (Thompson) 0 After one false start, in which Tasman's colors were conspicuous, the lot were sent away to an indifferent start, of whioh Tasman had all the boot, Nonpariel second, and Chancellor third. In this order they ran until coming round the second time, Nonpariel came up to Tasman and tried to get the lead, but was unable to stay with Tasman, who still lead, and on passing a post he had a narrow escape of carrying it away On the first time round at the far side of the course he carried away ene of the posts, which fell nearly aorooa Nonpariel, who was running close up to the leader, the latter having a lead of about a length. Coming up the straight Nonpariel, who had improved on his position, began to raoe with Tasman, and Chancellor, who had been lying in rear, also came up. Tasman was, however, not to be denied from Nonpariel, and the weight told too much on Mr Goodman's horse, who was unable to get nearer than within about a length from Tasman, Nonpariel being about half a length off. Time, 258. J. Mr Horsford entered a protest against the winner for going inside posts, which was maintained. Handicap Tp.ot, of 55 sovs, 10 sovs to second, and 5 sovs to the third ont of the stakes; weight not less than lOat; three miles. Mr Bennett's g m Polly, 6 yrs, 50yds (W. Flying Handicap, of 25 sovs ; one mile. Messrs Mason and Vallance's b h Flour de Lis, 7st 6lb (Hastie) 1 Mr S. Cutts' ch m Nautilus, 4 yrs. Bft 61b (Thompson) 2 Mr P. Starlight went a good bat, with Fleur-de-Lys and Nautilus oloae up. At the turn by the saddling paddock for the first time, Starlight and Fleur-de-Lys were racing at a hot pace, when tho former cannoned against the poll, but fortunately the boy held on. After this Fleur-de-Lys took the lead, Starlight having evidently had enough of it. Nautilus was second, Fleur-de-Lys having about three lengths the best of it. Luna laid third, and coming up the straight all three were running at a good pace. Fleur-de-Lys, however, had the beat of it, and won by a length pretty

1 comfortably from Nautilus, a good raoe for second place between tbe latter and Luna, resulting in a win for Mr Cutta' mare by a ' length. .Novel Uacb of 25 sovs ; weight for age. Though Jester was ridden out, he could not hold with them, and Supplejaok won by about two length*, the same distance between second and third.

AUCKLAND SUMMEB MEETING. [PEBSS ABHOOIATIOW TBLBGBAM. 1 AUCKLAND, December 26. The holiday was olosely observed, and the weather was magnificent. The first race of the Auokland Summer Meeting took place at Ellerslie, and 4000 were present. The police suppressed all the totalisators present, save, those licensed by the Jookey Club, and also all sweeps and games got up for profit, but did not interfere with iriendly sweeps. The totalisator did good business, the club receiving half the profits. Maiden Plate, 100 sova ; li miles. Othello (Laing) 1 Miss Domett (Wattie) 2 Envy filly (Williams) 3 The Fanny Fisher colt was scratched. Betting, 6 to 4 Envy filly, 2 to 1 Lady Yatterina and Othello, 2 to 1 Tenambra. Yatterina filly appeared stiff on ooming on the course. Tenambra was off condition, bnt the others looked very fit. A fair start was made, Miss Domett having slightly the worst of it. On passing the stand, Tenambra had the lead, but only held it for a short distance.; Miss Domett had a good third position, and was raoing strongly ; Mr Walters' filly was fourth, and Lady in the rear. After passing the stand, Lady Yatterina showed signs of irritability, and at a oritioal turn, jumped a paling fence outside the course. Her legs caught in the fenoe and she fell heavily. Her rider (Wood) escaped safely, but the mare was badly hurt. Meanwhile the others went on at a strong pace. At the ontting Othello closed on the leaders, and . Miss Domett improved her condition greatly. Coming round the turn into the straight, Othello gained so much as to make it evident that he would romp home. Envy filly and Miss Domett, under the whip, was unable to oome to terms, and the former being evidently pumped out, was easily cut down by Miss Domett near the post. The Yatterina filly made a bad fourth. Time, 2min. 20seos. Frkk Handicap of 100 sovs. One mile. Tim Whiffler (Derrett) 1 Hilda (Newman) 2 Lara (Tom Taylor) 3 Foul Play, who had broken down on the previous day, and Badsworth, who was out of condition, were scratched. Betting—6 to 4 Billingsgate, 2to 1 Hilda, 3 to 1 Paramena, and Tim Whiffler 5 to 10, 10 to lon the rest. Paramena was fidgety on the post, and several false starts was made. Tim Whiffler was fall of life, and as fit as hands could make him, and he came into favor as soon as he came on the course. After several false starts Paramena went with a slight lead, closely followed by Lara. Before the back of the course was reached it was manifest that Director had got into too good oompany, for he was left twenty lengths behind, and appeared unable to gallop. Paramena held the lead to the catting, Billingsgate and Tim Whiffler holding modest positions in the rear, Tim being last. At the catting Lara, who was racing strong, challenged the leaders, and a grand race round the turn ensued. Billingsgate made an effort, hat oould not olose the gap with the leading horses. Here Tim was let out, and running grandly out down his horses in succession, and in the straight collared the leaders, passed them full of running, and won by a length from Hilda. Lara was a good third. Time, lmin 47fseo. Ratcatcher, Florence, and Miss Domett also ran. Handicap Hurdle Hack, of 100 soys; two miles and a quarter, over nine flights of hurdles. Matau led oyer the first hurdle, followed by Bawenata, the rest being in a cluster. At the back of the course Matau, Bawenata, and Olarenoe led in the order named, with the rest close up. On reaohing the cutting Lonehand improved his position to third plaoe, Bawenata still holding the lead into the straight, with Harkaway second. Lsnehand third, and Olarenoe last but one. In the second turn, at the back, the same positions were maintained, but Lonehand closed with Harkaway at the cutting, passed him, and challenged Bawenata for the lead. At this point the grey looked very dangerous. On coming down the turn to the straight be lost two lengths. He raced the leader to the last hurdle, to which both rose almost simultaneously, which was oleverly oleared by Bawenata, but the grey struck and broke the panel, and Bawenata won by a length. This was the most successful hurdle race over run here. The Lark in the second round struck a hurdle, and was badly injured. Auckland Cup ; handicap of 300 sovs; 2i miles.

King Quail (Leach 1 Hilda (Thomson) 2 Konilwort'n (Laing) 3 Foul Play, Yatapa, Othello, Vortex, Envy Filly and Bawenata were icratohed. Betting—--6 to 4 on Peerless Colt, 4 to 10 agst King Quail and Kenilworth, 3 to 1 Maori, 16 to 1 anything elae. A field of twelve being left, all were more or leas backed, and the keenest interest w&s manifested in the preliminary gallops. Great difficulty was experienced in getting a good start, but at length they got oS moderately well. The Poet sprang to the front, and led to the baok of the course, followed by Maori, the others tailing off, Lara and Moonstone being last. King Quail and Kenilworth were in the centre division. Kenilworth and Hilda, racing very strongly, improved their positions, but at the cutting the Quail came up with a rush, and oame to terms successively with all the leaders, and occupied premier position on entering the straight. He maintained the lead to the finish, and won by a length from Hilda, Kenilworth third, Lara a good fourth. Badsworth, Stanley, and Rswi also ran. Time, 4min. Bseo. Tenambra and Smike were never in it. Time, lmin. 311 seos. The only accidenta were thoae to Lady Yatterina and the Lark in the Maiden Plate and Hurdles respectively. A ohild, three years old, was thrown from ahorse and badly injured. GBEYMOUIH RACES. | PBBSS ASSOCIATION TFLKGKAM.J GREYMOTJTH, December 26. Eventually the stewards notified that the raoe was null and void. Bbttnnbb Stakes, 25 sovs, one and a half mile*. Only three started.
