PRIZE DISTRIBUTIONS.

LYTTELTON. The -distribution of prizes to the scholars attending the Lyttelton Borough School took gaoe yesterday. In the afternoon Mrs J. T. ease gave away the prizes to the children belonging to the infant department of the school, and the successful scholars from the upper school were presented with theirs in the evening, Dr. Rouse o(filiating as chairman. The school building was decorated with flowers and evergreens, and a most attractive and pleasing appearance. Probably nowhere in Canterbury, if indeed in the colony, is there to be met with publio school buildings in a better state of preservation than are the Lyttelton educational buildings, and the school fittings, desks, hat racks, &0., may be said to be equal to new-.as regards any damage done them either by whittling or miaohievous breaking. The visitors present at the distribution ooald not fail but to have observed these features.yesterday, and they are worth men'tionieg, seeing that the schools have been in daily use by something like 500 children for -eight or nine years. Dr. Bouse, when presenting the priz 3S, congratulated the scholars upon, their tidy appearance, as he had excellent reason for doing. Ho regretted the absence of Dr. Donald through sickness, and in addressing the children, referred to the fact that the results of the late examination were not to hand. Be thought this year they need not be surprised if those results ware not very grand, sickness having interfered very considerably with the work of the school during the year, necessitating also the closing of the school for a -lengthened period. After adverting to the distinction pained by some of tho old pupils of the Borough school in having taken prizoa at the High school and a Boot'd of Education scholarship, he com menoed distributing the prizo books, remarking as he did so tha. they had been allotted with the greatest possible care and justice. .Following is tho piize list: ’ Standard Vl.—'General knowMgo, Annie Jenkins Ist, William Austin 2ud ; arithmetic, 'William Malcomsoa Ist.
