At a public meeting to night a committee was appointed to receive a commission appointed by the Christchurch Chamber of Commerce to report upon the East and West Coast Railway, and furnish all possible information as to the resources of this district, and as to the necessity of starting the construction of the line from this end as well as from the Canterbury side. Mr Bathgate, the elected member lor Roslyn, is understood to have resigned his seat on tho Land Board, as he holds that a member of tho House cannot sit under the Disqualification Act of 1878, in consequence of drawing salary. Erize Firing. At the Rifle Association meeting to-day, the second match was won by Volunteer W. Willooks, Clutha, who won the first match yesterday. He scored 83 out of a possible 105. For the aggregate, Coventry leads with 273, with Fastier second with 272. Kerr, of Portobello, made the possible at 300 yards today. The new Wimbledon targets are being used. The third match was won by Brooks, of the North Dunedin Rifles, with 66 out of a possible 75. INVERCARGILL, December 15, 1.0 GT. Session. The Grand Lodge 1.0.0. T. had a lodge sitting yesterday, and got through much business. In the evening a deputation from the Roohabites presented an address, which was acknowledged by the G.W.O.T. To-day the officers were elected. A large and successful public meeting was held to-night, under the presidency of Bro. J. T. Smith. The session is expected to close to-morrow. A Chinaman Buried. At the Round-hill yesterday a Chinaman was buried alive in his claim. His remains have since been unearthed, and brought to Riverton.
