They have communicated with the London police. WELLINGTON, December 12. FireMr W. B. Browne’s house at Ohariro was burnt to the ground on Saturday. The origin of the fire is unknown. The contents were uninsured, bat the National had a lien of £6OO on the building. LYBLL, December 12, Good Prospects. The reef in the United Victory level was intersected in the eastern crossing this morning. The stone looks well, and carries gold all through. GBEYMOUTH, December 12. A lode 2ft Gin to 3ft in the Golden Fleece claim has been struck, and is believed to be a continuation of the old Fleece block. The prospects are said to be promising. DUNEDIN, December 12. A Defect SomewhereThe refrigerating machinery on board the chip Dunedin at Port Ohalmere broke down this morning. The crank shaft and some castings are broken. About 500 sheep will have to be lauded. Racing StockThe racehorses Volunteer and Bawdon were offered for sale on Saturday, but were passed in at 220 and 150 guineas respectively. “The Smiler.” Mr T. L. Shepherd, formerly M.H.E. and now Clerk of the Court, Palmerston, has been suspended by Mr Watt, 8.M., for insubordination, for taking possession without authority of the bailiff’s office, and for irequent absences from duty. Mr Watt had to effect an entrance to the Court House by a window during Shepherd's absence, and be removed Shepherd’s personal belongings and furniture from the bailiff’s office. The matter will be referred to the Minister for Justice. TIM ABU, December 12. Legal. The Supreme Court opens to-morrow. The criminal business comprises—two cases of arson, one of forgery and uttering, four of theft and false pretences, one of unmentionable offenoe, and two civil cases. Advance Timaru. The locally owned barque Ganymede, 570 tons, with 300 tons of coal on board, was brought alongside the wharf this morning to take in ballast from the trucks. She is the largest vessel that has yet been alongside. The WeatherBain is a good deal wanted on the roost. There was a slight shower yesterday. Owing to the cool spring, fruit, &c., is backward,and from the same cause the dry weather has not I been so injurious as it otherwise would have J been. The crops are looking well generally. *
