Referring to the recent quick passage of the Cotopaxi, the “ Pall Mall Gazette” of September 23rd remarks :—“ A striking instance of the progress which is being made in ocean steam navigation, and the rapidity with which_ our Hast of foreign-going steamers is freeing itself from the obligation of patting in to coal at porta lying no great distance apart was reported in last Saturday’s “Times.” A vessel belong, ing to the Pacific Steam Navigation Company has jest arrived at Plymouth from Adelaide, in South Australia, after a voyage —including all stoppages (one of them a protracted detention in the Suez Canal)—of thirty-five days three hours. What is especially remarkable is the union of the two qualities of bigh speed and great coal endurance in this ship, the Cotopaxi. She made 322 nautical miles a day for eighteen consecutive days, that is, she steamed 5700 miles at the rate of fully 13i knots an hour. It would be interesting to sec a statement of the number of cruisers, partially armoured or altogether unarmoured, which have been specially designed to ‘ protect ’ the fleets of the far-steaming classes, of which the Cotopaxi, though a favorable, is not by any means the only representative that could do the same or anything like it.” SHIPPING TELEGRAMS. New Plymouth, November 30. The steamer Wanaka left for Nelson and Southern ports at 10.30 a.m. Passengers—Mr and Mrs Barricen, Mr and Mrs Howell, Mr Atkinson, Mr Bullen.
