DESTRUCTIVE EIRE AT REEFTON

The fire originated in Mr Finlay’s bakery establishment shortly after two o’clock. It obtained a rapid hold and spread quiokly. It consumed on the one side Hampson’s shop and premises, Michael Dunn’s shop and furniture warehouse to the corner of the street, and on the other side Shephard’s old shop, Dawson’s hall and Dawson’s hotel, Gorbett’s bakery, Danks’ hotel, and Callings’ boot shop. If was checked at the right-of-way next Dicks’ butchery, which is safe. The heat was intense, and caused damage to Ooxam’s hotel and Ohing’s store across the Broadway. Finlay was insured for £4OO, and Dawson for £IOOO. Great damage was done to property in other places by the hasty removal. The unsecured loss is £15,000. The casualties were Charles Sinclair, broken arm ; Henry Bridge, broken head; David Mcßeath, hand severely hurt, &o. Tho air was hot and oppressive, and it being calm prevented a further spread. The charred remains of Peter Alstad, a native of Denmark, were found in the debris. The insurances are :—lmperial—Dawson’s £SOO ; Rees (Corbett), £IOO. Victorian—Finlay, £200; Ceilings, £75; Bank, £330. Standard—Ceilings, £200; Finlay, £2OO ; Dawson, £SOO. New Zealand— Collings, £350; Ching, £4O. The Now Zealand and Standard divided the Globe Hotel, £100; and the Victoria had a risk of £IOO on Bell’s tobacconist shop.
