CANTERBURY COLLEGE.
A meeting of the Board of Governors was held yesterday afternoon at 3 o’clock. Present —The Most Bov. tho Primate, Dre, Coward and Turnbull, Messrs O. O. Bowen, B. O. J. Stevens, J. Inglis, J. O. Veel, W. J. W. Hamilton, J. D. Enys, B. W. Bereday, B. do O. Malot, H. R. Webb, and tho Bov. O. Eraser. Mr B. de O. Malot was voted to the chair.
Mr Stevens moved —“That the opinion of the School of Agriculture be obtained on the expediency of prizes for proficiency in the different subjects taught in the School being eslablished." Mr W. J. W. Hamilton seconded.—Tho Bav. O. Eraser did not wish to offer any opposition to Mr Stevens’ motion, but thought the object sought by the mover would be facilitated by the words —“ That the committee of the School of Agriculture be requested to consider and report on ” being substituted for the first portion of tho resolution.—Mr Stevens consented, and the motion as amended road as follows ;—“ That the committee of the School of Agriculture be requested to consider and report on the expediency of prizes for proficiency in the different subjects taught in the School being established.” This was unanimously carried. Tho report of the estates committee of November 23-d, ISBI, recommending the Board to authorise the College seal being affixed to transfer Q. Tisoh to P. Tisoh, P. Tisoh to J. O’Shea, of reserve 1124; transfer Pannott to J. M. Burza of reserve 1170 ; transfer A. Dalzoll to William Dalzoll of reserve 1150, was next considered and agreed to. The Board then proceeded to consider and agree to sundry recommendations of tho College committee, viz.—Tho re appointment of the fourth assistant master at the Boys’ High School, and to authorise the committee to adjust his salary if required ; also certain alterations in the College regulations. It was agreed that this Board suggests to the Senate of the University the advisability ot replacing elementary astronomy in tho list of the branches of physical science.— On the motion of Mr Bowen, seconded by Mr Webb, the following recommendation of the committee wes agreed to, the Rev. C. Eraser dissenting:—“The committee recommends that as there is no teaching in the College in mental science and in constitutional history and jurisprudence, these subjects be for tho present removed from tho list of subjects in which tho College undertakes to examine, but that the Board of Governors be requested to make provision for the teaching of constitutional history and jurisprudence at its earliest convenience. This regulation to come into foroo in 1883 so as to avoid any chance of any injustice being done by reason of students having already entered in these subjects.’’ A suggested alteration in regulation 7 as follows :—“That Section I, be repealed, and tho following inserted instead : —Students will receive credit for having kept three years' terms only on condition of their having passed during their undergraduate course ten (10) examinations, whereof at least three (3) must be taken together at tho end of tho first (let) year, and at least throe (3) at tho end of tho second (2nd) year, and at least two (2) at the end of the third (3rd) year.” Consideration was deferred till tho next meeting of tho Board.
On the motion of the Chairman, seconded by the Primate, authority was given to print the calendar for 1882. —Mr Bowen moved, and Mr W. J. W. Hamilton seconded—“ That Hr P. de c. Malet be authorised to sign cheques during the absence of Mr Montgomery from Christchurch.” This was agreed to.— On the motion of Mr Bowen, seconds 1 by Mr Inglis, it was resolved—“ That the Board appoint Messrs Justin Aylmer and H. Piper Governors of the High School, Akaroa.” The Chairman called attention to the Public Library expenditure as under : —ln the year 1874, £1258 Os 7d ; 1875, £639 7a lOd ; 1876, £1589 12s 2d ; 1877, £1853 5s lOd ; 1878, £1750 6s 3d j 1879, £1539 8s 4d j 1880, £2328 9s 3d ; and 1881, to September 30tb, £1603 5s 9d.—Mr Pereday called attention to the next meeting of the Governing Body falling on Boxing Day, and moved Monday, January 9th, at 3 p.m.” This being agreed to the Board adjourned accord.ingly-
