WISHY-WASHY ORGANS.
To the Editor of the Olohe. Fib, —Of course there are two parties—political parties—at work duringthe present electioneering struggle. The so-called Liberal party is told in the “ Lyttelton Times” and in the “Star,” that they, the “Lyttelton Times” and “Star,” are the only Liberal organs in this city, and many people are weak-minded enough to believe this ! Now, what is really the case ? Yesterday I addressed a letter to the “ Lyttelton Times,’’ refuting some charges made in the advertisement columns of that paper against a Liberal candidate who happens to be a poor man, while his opponent is an exceedingly rich one. The poor candidate had been awfully “slated” in the advertisement in question, and his private character impugned. What did the “ Lyttelton Times” do, that “Liberal” and working man’s advocate ? Why, Sir, It declined publishing the replication to a gross personal attack on this “ Liberal” candidate in the following Jesuitical and “business” form : “ We have several letters from supporters of the various candidates for the Stnnmore representation. In Justice to other correspondents Heave the mark ! —the financial one!} who have made use of our advertising columns, we must refer them to the same method of publication.” There is a Liberal—or, liberal with a small I—paper for thus lays the law down, that a rich man can abuse his opponent when he pays for the insertion of the abuse, at, say, 5s per inch, while the traduced one, if he cannot afford to disburse the amount in replication must go to the wall. The “ Telegraph ” has now been purchased by the aristocratic wealth of the city. the Cathedral square prints are playing hide-and-seek for purposes of a mysterious nature —probably for purposes of their “ inner ” own. Let us have a genuine independent newspaper, so as to keep healthy the expression of antagonistic opinions, whatever they may be. Yours, &0., AN OPPONENT OF THE PRESENT MINISTRY. Phillipstown, November 20th.
