[reeter’s telegrams.] MELBOURNE, November 2-4. Pure Merinos. In the Legislative Assembly to-day a Bill to legalise the totalisator was rejected bv a majority of six. SYDNEY, November 2-4. The Chinese Poll Tax. At to-day’s sitting of the Conference of the Committee of the Legislative Council and Assembly, for the consideration of the Influx of Chinese Restriction Bill, the question of a £lO poll tax upon all Chinese coming into the colony by land was discussed at length, and the representatives of the Council ultimately agreed to accede to the demand of the Assembly for the retention of the clause providing for the imposition of the tax. Cricket. The match between the English team and a Twenty-two of Maitland, N.S.W., was concluded at that town to-day, and resulted in a draw in favour of the Englishmen. ADELAIDE, November 24. Shipping. Arrived, this morning—Orient steamship Cotopaxi, from Plymouth. Sir George Cumine Strahan, Governor of Tasmania, is a passenger by her.
