DATE COFFEE.

This morning, by invitation of Mr Richard Walton, a few gentlemen met in his room, at Messrs Matson and Co. "a, to sample a new product, viz , date coffee. Though new here the coffee has been for some time past in use in England, and the company, whioh was formed to work tho discovery, has been exceedingly successful. On the visitors arriving Mr Walton was discovered going through a series of mysterious manipulations over a cafetiere, softly humming to himself the while—

" Donblo, donblo, toil and trouble." The bluish glare of the spirits of wine whioh were burning under the cafeticre made a very realistio picture, and Mr Walton strongly resembled one of the witches in the incantation soone from " Maobeth." Which of the witches he resembled is a secret which not even wild horses shall drag out. Waving his visitors to seats with one hand, with the other he gracefully lifted off tho lid, and allowed the aroma —which Mr Mataon said was worth all the money—to permeate the apartment. Then with that grace and dexterity which is so peculiarly his own, he filled the cups of eggshell china, which had been provided for the ocoasion—for Mr Walton is a little inclined to be aesthetic—and asked for the verdict. The connoisseurs present, representing fiuanc?, law, commercp, and the Fourth Estate, were unanimous in their approval of the new compound. Soft to the taste, fragrant, and without the heaviness of ooffee, there can bo no doubt of tho excellence of the new compound. " Ah," says Mr Walton, with a regretful sigh, as who should say here ia bliss deferred—" That, and a cigarette of Latukia, and one could fancy oneself in the roue gardens of Istamboul." The visitors, headed by Mr Matson, after this filed silently out, leaving Mr Walton still intent on his magic cauldron, and waiting for fresh arrivals. For all that the date coffee is good, and will become quite as popular hero m at home.
