THE MAYORALTY.
To the Jfditor of the Globe. " O wad somo power the giftie gie us, To.see oureels as itherg see u», It wad free mony a blunder free us, An' foolish notion."
Sib, —And bo Mr Gapes has had the temerity to have himself nominated again for the Mayoralty. Does the littlo man really think that his year of office has been such a success that ho can again woo the sweet voices of the burgosses with any chance of re-election ? Surely the bump of conciet is very largely devolopod in that gentleman if ho thinks the electors are so blind to his manifold shortcomings, Ask who you will, the universal answer is, "Mr Gapes as a Mayor, is an absoluto failure; ho does not possess a single qualification for the office, unless it is to pocket the £3OO which ia voted to him for official expenses." It would be extremely interesting to know what has induced Mr Gapes at the last moment to try again to foist himself upon this city as its Chief Magistrate ; it would be also instructive to know who is pulling the wires, and how much a certain much-loved cfficiol has to do with it. I shall be greatly surprised if the burgesses of Christchuroh do not at the forthcoming election show, in a most unmistakeable manner, their appreciaof Mr Gapes and his conduot during the past year (especially in regard to his mistaken support of a certain official), by plaoing him in the same position as he was two years ago, namely, at the bottom of the poll. When a man cornea forward mora than once for reeleotion, he generally has something to point to what he has done for his follow citizens. Will Mr Gapes please enlighten the elootors and say what single good thing he has done or promoted, in what way he has distinguished himself, how has he shown hospitality, how much of his honorarium has he disbursed in benevolent or other public objects ? Let him answer these questions before placing himself in a position altogether unsuited to his abilities. Yours, &c, A BUBGESS.
