TO THE RATEPAYERS OF THE CITY OF CHRISTCHURCH. 1 ADIES AND GENTLEMEN,—I have the honor to anounce that, in response to a largely signed requisition, 1 have been NOMINATED as a CANDIDATE for the office of MAYOR of your city for the ensuing year. In asking your support I consider it Incumbent upon me to place my views on city affairs generally before you ; I also ask the privilege of submitting to you my claims for election to and qualifications for the discharge of the duties of this honorable office. I have in my previous announcement (vide “Times,” Press, &c.) drawn your attention to my standing as an old colonist and citizen ; also to my services as a Councillor, commencing in the year 1866, since which, time I have gained considerable knowledge and experience in the management of municipal affairs, and have been, I am happy to believe, Instrumental in initiating several important and useful city improvements. _ If elected X shall strongly oppose any increase in taxation, and will exert my influence to reduce the present rates, and also the expenditure where practicable. I will endeavor to encourage Public Worka beneficial to the interests of the city, such also as are likely to prove self-supporting, and which ultimately will create a revenue to ease the burdens of the citizens. I will strenuously seek to assist to promote anything tending to the prosperity of the city, socially and commercially. I will give my earnest attention to economise and improve the organisation of the official staff. I cannot help expressing my regret at the want of foresight or neglect of our leading men when under Provincial Government in not providing Christchurch with just endowments, similar to those accorded to other important New Zealand cities, a course which, has left no scope for our Corporation to improve the attractiveness and convenience of the city except by heavy taxation. Should you honor me with your confidence, and elect me to fill this honorable position of head of the Corporation, I promise that all my time and my best energies shall bo directed to promote the interest of the city generally. Trusting to receive an evidence on the day • of the poll of the continuous good will and confidence of my fellow citizens, which I have for many years enj eyed, I am, yours most faithfully, J. G. I HEREBY agree to build and entirely complete the NEW HALL, according to the plans and specifications prepared by Messrs Jacobsen Bros., and to hand it over 3 to Messrs H. E. May and Co. by the 4th day of March next, or to forfeit and allow to be deducted from my last payment three pounds per day for each and every day I may be obliged to take over that time. (Signed) W.
