The election for the vacancy in the representation of Stafford, caused by the death of Mr A. McDonald, tho Liberal member, took place to-day, and resulted in the return of Mr T. Salt, a Conservative, by a majority of 297. The Irish voters claim that the Conservative victory was due to their support. The French Treaty.
Sir Charles Dilko, Under Secretary for Foreign Affairs, has left London for Paris, to confer with M. Gamhetta and his colleagues in regard to tho Anglo-French Commercial Treaty negotiations. WASHINGTON, November 19. The President’s Murderer.
The trial of Guiteau for the murder of President Garfield was continued to-day. Guiteau’a demeanour in Court is quite callous. An attempt was made on his life to-day as he was being conveyed back to prison. A mounted man fired at him with a revolver, and wounded him in tho hand. The perpetrator of tho outrage, with the aid of his horse, succeeded in effecting his escape, and is still at largo.
