POPULAR AMUSEMENTS ASSOCIATION.
A meeting of the committee of the above was held at the City Council Chambers yesterday afternoon at 4 o’clock. Present—His Worship the Mayor of Christchurch, Messrs Andrews, Drewett, Alport (hon. treasurer), Crooks, Samuels, Hobbs, Davie, and Haskins (hon. sec). The Mayor having briefly explained that the business would be to arrange l:or the annual sports to be held on Anniversary Day, December 16th next, called upon the treasurer, who reported a balance in hand from the operations of last year of £9B 11s Bd. He reminded them that the association had been started and kept going chiefly in connection with gentlemen of the City Council, and that so far their efforts had been highly successful. If, this year, their preparations were a little backward, yet ho was sure there was no intention of letting the thing fall through. No doubt there would bo a groat deal of work to be done by the committee, but, as in former years, when the time came they would be found at their posts, and that they would be ns completely successful as hitherto. Ha had heard that there was a feeling in some quarters as to shifting the annual demonstration to the Ferry road. He was not in favor of that, and he did not believe the majority of the people were. Hagloy Park was the proper place for their operations, and he hoped that it would always remain uo. They had no intention of going into opposition with Lancaster Park. What they did was to provide sports for the people Et largo. They took money thankfully from those who were able to give it to them and chose, and for those who could not pay, or would not, they provided free of charge. Ho had heard that the Volunteers contemplated making a demonstration on Anniversary Day. If they could be induced to hold a review in the Park he was sure that then, together with their sports, they would have a holiday such as had not been seen in Canterbury for many a year. It was resolved—“ That the sports be carried out this year as usual.” In discussing finance it was pointed out that the association had a building to be used as a committee room, which had been paid for last year, and the only expense besides prizes which would fall on them would be the preparation of the ground, which was indeed in tolerably good order. Mr Hsskinß was re-appointed hon. secretary and Mr Alport hon. treasurer. A ground committee was elected of Messrs Walkdon, Drewett, Crooks, and Hobbs. Messrs Andrews, Davie, Mitchell, Samuels, and Lambert were appointed a committee for preparation of a programme. Messrs George Turner, senior, and James Campbell were elected members of committee, and the meeting adjourned till Friday, November 25th, the sub-committee being instructed thea to bring up their reports.
