ShowThe Whangarei Agricultural Show was largely attended, and successful. A Crotchety CandidateMr W. G. Garrard addressed the electors of City North to-night. Mr Garrard said he was opposed to distramt for rent or enforcing mortgages. Whore a poor man could not pay his arrears of rent or mortgage, interest, or principal, he wou’d make it a State debt. He was opposed to Chinese or assisted immigration. On the Native question ho believed that both races were wrong, but would fight for the white man. Ho would support Sir G. Grey. A vote of want of confidence was rejected, and one of confidence carried almost immediately amidst yells of laughter. OPUNAKE, November 1* A Fool and his Tricks. A narrow escape from a fatal accident occurred at the Opunako Hotel last night. A person under the influence of drink entered a room where three or four gentlemen were asleep. Seeing a rifle lying in the corner, he took it up, and while examining it it exploded. Mr Armit, of the “ Hawera Star,” was asleep close to where the discharge took place, and a quantity of grains of powder entered his face, but fortunately the bullet struck the iron at the head of the bed, which turned its course, otherwise Mr Skeet and Mr Hadfield (Native interpreter), would have been seriously injured, if not killed. WELLINGTON, November 18. Sporting. Acceptances for the Wellington Spring Handicap close on Monday, at eight o’clock. Going Ahead. The directors of the Wcllington-Manawatu Railway have concluded all their preliminary arrangements, and to-day concluded the terms of their agreement with the Government. These are of a highly-satisfactory nature. The company’s solicitor has been instructed to draw np the formal contract on the terms settled. The terminus of line is to be at Longburn, about four miles from Palmerston north, this being found a much preferable route to the Foxton one. The Government do not require any security from the company beyond an undertaking to expend £50,000 within the first year, being content beyond this to rely on the powers given by clause 123 of the Railway Construction Act. Five years is allowed to complete the line. The allocation of land has been fixed between the Government and the company, and the valuation made. The line will bo eighty-two miles in length, and the company is entitled to £123,000 worth of land. A recant Government survey of the proposed main lino through Manawatu Gorge showed

that it can be completed for about £IO,OOO per mile, or £90,000 from Palmerston to Woodville, As between Napier and Wellington, this lino will be thirty-three miles shorter than the lino from Napier through the Wairarapa. The financial arrangement® to enable the company to commence the work at once are likely to be completed in a few days. NELSON, November 18. A long- VoyageThe schooner Annie Hill, thirty-two days out from Lyttelton to Q-reymouth, put into harbor to-day, and lies at the outer anchorage. Captain Arnott is sick, and a doctor has gone on board. WESTPORT, November 19, A Political Trimmer. Mr Munro addressed a crowded meeting last night, and was well received. He does not bind himself to any party. A vote of confidence was carried unanimously. DUNEDIN, November 18, The Knife. A seaman named Alfred Palmer, belonging to the Rio Grande, was arrested, charged with wounding the boatswain of the same vessel. Palmer, who was about to taka hi* dinner, had a knife and fork in his hand, and in u scuffle the knife struck Carlson, the boatswain, in ths side. An Unsatisfactory Reason. Two children are reported as having died at Wanaka through eating unripe fruit. Supposed Case of Drowning. A man named Lenniway is supposed to have been drowned in Gatlin’s Bivcr. He was sailing in a flat-bottomed boat with a companion when it filled. Lenniway swam towards shore, but has not since been heard of. His mate was picked up very exhausted. OAMAEU, November 18. The Show. The show to-day was well attended and was very successful. The Cup for draught horses was won by the Hon. M. Holmes, and that for the shorthorns by Mr E. Menlovo. GEEYMOUTH, November 18. Overloading. A storekeeper at Barry town named Mcllroy while shooting a bullock to-day had his left hand blown off by the gun bursting. Mining.
