THE S.S. PENGUIN ASHORE IN THE FRENCH PASS.
[PRESS ASSOCIATION telegram.] WELLINGTON, November 18, The Penguin is ashore at the French Pass. The Wallace is standing by her. The position is not considered dangerous. NELSON, November 18. The Hawea arrived at the French Pass at two o’clock this morning, and found the Penguin jammed in one of the washways or breaks in thereof. She lies about two of her own lengths from the beacon at Pass Point. At her bows there were 17tt. of water, and aft 18ft. at low water. She is straight through the reef, and is fixed in by the rocks both sides about abreast of the mainmast. The tide runs, both at ebb and flood, straight with her. Part of tho propeller was three feet dry at high water. She has laid on the tide and has not strained. At 5.40, when tho Hawea left, she had made no water. Tho Wallace is still alongside, but, on account of the strength of the tide, there is very little time left for work. It is expected she will be got off when the tide next makes.
