Sydenham Mayobalty.—There is every reason to believe that Or. Joyce will be Major of Sydenham for the ensuing term, since, far as can be known at present, there is no likelihood of a contested election. Lyttblton Magistrate's Coubt.—The lad, Harry Vincent, who was charged with taking some poultry belonging to Mrs Kerr. of Opaws, was brought up before this Court this morning. The police had not succeeded in arresting the real culprit in the case—an old offender named Higgins, and as it appeared from the evidence of the lad's uncle that be was a well-behaved boy, the Magistrate, Mr J. Beswick, discharged him.—Peter Brogue, who was drunk on Saturday at the railway station, was fined 10s.—W. Burns, for the third offence of drunkenness, was fined 40s, or ninety six hours* imprisonment.—Peter John Erricksen, suffering from lunacy from drink, was remanded for a week for medical treatment.

Intbbcolonial Wbatheb Exchange.— Sydney, Saturday evening.—Fine weather, with light N.E. winds, prevails on the Australian coast, but there is a moderate depression forming in the B.W. Baromoter— Albany, 29 8; Portland, 29.9 ; Hobart, 30 ; Sydney, 30.1. The Late Show.—A number of prize cuttle and sheep, purchased at the sales held after the late Agricultural Show, went North on Saturday by the Union Company's e.s. Wanaka. WAKAHtri Constituency. The polling places appointed for tbe electoral district of Wakanui are as follow :—Ashburton, county saleyards office; Bakaia, Town Hall; Seafield, schoolroom ; and Longbeach, Boad Board office. Gaiety Theatre.—Mr and Mrs Hart gave a new programme at the G-aiety Theatre on Saturday night to a very good house. Every item went capitally from first to last, and the entertainment was throughout a success. Tonight they will again appear in another change of bill. Volttntbbb Rbview.—On the coming AnDay, December 16tb, it is proposed to hold a review of the Volunteers, It has been suggested for the convenience, probably of Artillery practising, that it shall be held on Quail Island, in Lyttelton harbor. Union Bowing Chub.—The contest by the club's fours for the commodore's prize was fixed for Saturday last, but owing to the enforced absence of some of the men it has been postponed till the latter part of this wsok. 0.J.0. Settling.—The settling by the C.J.O. for the recent meeting took place on Saturday afternoon, at the rooms, Commercial Hotel. The sums of £SO and over received were as follows:—Hon. W Robinson, £1444 15s 5 Mr Horsford, £468 18a ; Mr Westmaoott, £466 2s; Mr Walters, £342 2»; Mr Goodman, £171; Mr OweD, £ll7 16s ; Mr Bate, £95 ; Mr E. Cutts, £74 10s ; Messra Mason and Vallancs, £95 ; Mr G. Eraser, £55 ; Mr W. O. Webb, £SO. The General Election.—The writs for Ohristohurch North, Sydenham, Heathcote, and Stanmore have been issued. Tbe nomination for Ohristohurch North will take place at the City Counoil Chambers, that for Sydenham at the Borough Council office, for Heathcote at the Oddfellows' Hall, Woolston, and for Stanmore at the schoolhouee, Bingsland. In all cases the nominations will be on December 2nd, and the polling on Decernber 9th. The Mayoralty. Tbe nomination of candidates for the office of Mayor of Christchurch for the ensuing year must be made, accompanied by a deposit of £lO, at the City Council Chambers, on or before noon on November 22nd, the election taking plaoj on November 30th. Abtilleby Bans.—The above musicians have each been provided with a very nest lamp, made of tin, 3in in height, by IJin in breadth, with miniature bull's-eye and oil can complete. The lamps, whioh will be worn in the cap, were supplied to the order of the bandmaster by Messrs Billens and Son, of Victor* street,

Committed *ob Tbiai;.—At the B£ Bld «£ fc Magistrate's Court this morning W. W. Charter* was committed for trial at the next ■eision of the Supreme Court on six charges of embezzlement, involving an amount of £920, the total amount of his defalcations being stated as £2600. After the evidence was road over, he made a statement to the effect that though he took the money, he had no benefit from it. He intended, when brought before the higher Court, to make a full confession, disclosing, he said, the names of those who had aotualiy received it. A further charge of forgery and uttering was fixed to be heard on Monday next at 2 p.m.

Thbatbb Botai,.—Tho Operatic Sooiety gave another performance of " Madame Angot" on Saturday evening. The Theatre will be closed till Wednesday evening next, when a benefit will be accorded to Mrs Digby.

Kaiapoi Annual Spobts.—lt seems hardly probable that the sports usually held on New Year's Day will bn carried out, as no steps have yet been taken to form a committee or arrange a programme. As the sports have beenkept up for a number of years with success it is a pity that they ahould be allowed to fall through for want of a little more energy.

LXTTELTON COMINO FLECTIONS. The returning officer at Lyttelton gives notice elsewhere that the election for Mayor will be held on the 30tb inst., and the eleotion for member of Assembly on the 9th of December, nominations dosing a week previously for member. Messrs H. Allwright, S. B. Webb, and Hon. E. Biohardson have announced themselves candidates for Parliament, but so far no public steps have been taken with sespeot to the office of Mayor. Thb San Fbanoisco Mail.—The mai reached Auckland on Saturday morning, thirty-six days from London, the shortest time on record. Our Wellington correspondent telegraphs :—The Southern portion of the mails will be delayed over a day in Auckland, as the Penguin, which brings them down, does not leave Manukau till Sunday afternoon. She comes to Wellington direct, calling only at Taranaki, and is expected here on Monday evening, leaving again immediately for Lyttelton. Every effort will be made to catch the South express on Tuesday morning, so that the mails may be delivered both in Canterbury and Otago on that day, "whioh will be the thirty-ninth from London.

Ashley Counts' Council.—A meeting of thia Council was held al the Boad Board offioe, Bangiora, on Saturday morning. Present—Maura Higgins (ohairman),Fendall, Blaokett, Cunningham and MoFarlane. The meeting was held to nominate two governors for the Bangiora High School and other business. After gome conversation, it was deoided to adjourn the meeting to secure a full attendance.

Ashley. Fabmbbb' Club.—A meeting of this club was held at Loburn on November 7th. Present—Messrs J. A. Cunningham (chairman), Barker, Martin, Barwell, O. Cunningham, Free, Hodgson, Carr, E. H. Brown, and P. Duncan, hon. aeo. Mr Brown read an interesting paper "On the Breeding and Management of Merino Sheep," in the course of which he also gave some practical hints upon feeding and turnip culture. A vote of thanks was passed to Mr Brown. Messrs Feathers and Yates were elected as members of the olub. Mr J. A. Cunningham undertook to read a paper at next meeting "On the Cultivation of European Flax." After the usual vote of thanks to the chairman the meeting terminated. Piseon Flying.—The race for the championship of the East Christchurch Pigeon Flying Olub was flown on the 9th inst., the prize being a silver cup, value £5. The following birds competed :—Mr G. Bryenton's Potentate and Postboy, and Messrs Walker and Grouth's Satan and The Governor. The birds were liberated by Mr G. Anhcroft, stationmaster at Dunedin, Mr Bryenton's pair at 5.30 a.m., and Messrs Walker and Grouth's pair at 6 a.m. Mr Bryenton's Potentate won the match, flying the distance, 233 miles, in 6h 45min. Postboy was one minute later, and Messrs Walker and Grouth's The Governor was third, homing in seven hours. The members of the club were very unluoky in training for this race, a great many birds being lost, which accounts for only four competing. The following nominations have been made for the Derby, to be flown on December 16th : Mr W. Ashby's Detective Ist, Mischief, Datective 2nd, Farewell, Fidget, Moonlight and Wanderer ; Mr W. Williams' Highflyer, Bore, Taipo, Morora and Lilippee ; Mr G. Bryenton's Dundee, Bonny Doon, Swallow, Telegraph and Flying Dutchman ; Messrs Walker and Grouth's Pitwater, Chance, Queen, lusher, Doncaster, Jenny Lind, Derwent, The Boy and Stormfiend ; Mr B.' Foulk's Teviotdale, W. Skinner, Fairwind, 'Sing Quail, Mermaid, Traducer and Princess ; I Mr Oowlingham's Envoy ; Mr F. Williams' First Queen, Detective 3rd, Secret, Deception, Bemeay and Deadeye ; Messrs Collier and Bowby's Boyal George, Count, Penguin and Boyal Standard. About twenty-five birds are expected to start for this race. Ckiokbt.—At the Lancaster park ground on Saturday, the match between the Lancaster Park and the Midland clubs was commenced. The bowling of the former being somewhat weak the Midland made the running, scoring in its first innings 176. Washer, Watson and Ataok all figured up good totals. The Lancaster Park Olub then lost two wiokets for 8 runs. The match will be resumed next Saturday.—On the Hagley park ground on Saturday, the match between the second eleven of the U.C.O. and the Addington Club was finished, and ended in a draw, the game not being played out. Addington made 112 and 122 respectively in tbeir first and second innings, while the U.O.C. made 124 in its first, and did not get far into the second innings. For Addington the principal scorers were : Strange, 58; Wheatley, 18 and 40; Alpe, 18; E. Turner, 18 ; Ogier, 32. For the U.0.C., in its first innings, Milton made 38, B. Harman 20, Horwood and Beswick also ■coring liberally.—The COG. had a match Messrs Aehby and Hartland choosing sides. Hartland's side went in first, and were all disposed of for 76, the only scorer being E. Cotterill with 24. Far ABhby's side Mainwaring made 31,andEaston 25. The stumps were drawn when six wickets had fallen. The match will be resumed next Saturday.—On Saturday too wss finished the match between the Second Eleven of the Midland and Christ's College. The boys, though ploying a remarkably steady and good game, were overmatched, being beaten by seven wickets. The totals were—College . First innings, 52; second, 98. Midland : First inniDgs, 135 ; aeoond, 16, with seven wiokets to go down. For the College, H. H. Mathias was the heaviest scorer with 32, not out, in the second innings. For the Midland, W. H. Atack made 41, Bnd O. Palairet, 43 not out.—On Latimer Square the Biccarton and Standard Clubs tried conclusions, the result being that the latter won by two wickets and 2 runs.
