Waitaki arrived on Saturday morning from Northern porta, and left at 9 30 p.m. for Wellington. The Lake Ontario, bound to Calais, France, got away on Saturday morning with her cargo v>f grain. The master of her was put to groat straits for a crew, as much as .£SO for the run being asked by sailors. Several days’ delay resulted to bis ship, and ultimately he managed to get his complement of men together by paying £7 per month per man. During the recent cruise of the Reserve Squadron, a sea messenger, invented by Mr Julius Yandenburgh, of Portsmouth, was tried, by order of the Duke of Edinburgh, Admiral Superintendent of Naval Reserve. The “ messenger ” consists of a vessel, pointed at each end, 3ft 6in in length, made of copper, and lined with cork and composition to resist external pressure. The inner case will carry a weight of -601 b. The messenger was thrown over from the 'Hercules flagship in lat. 56 49 N., long. 42 E. on July 24th. It was picked up on August 18th by a fisherman, off Hanstholmen, Jutland, and although it had been twenty-five dais in the water, and had travelled about 1420 miles, it was quite uninjured. It was taken to the British Yica-Consol, and on being opened, was fonnd to contain a number of letters for England, which were at once posted, together with the following message, bearing the signature of the Dnke of Edinburgh This message is put overboard from her Majesty’s ship HeronLs, flagship of First Reserve Squadron, bound from Kiel to Leith, as an experiment, at the request of the inventor, and not on account of any accident or disaster. Messenger lanncbed at 11.30 p.m.; all well, weather fine, sea smooth, wind S.S.W., force 3. The finder is requested to deliver the messenger and paper to Lloyd’s agent or the British Consul, and to note the date picked np, and the latitude and longitude of the place where found. — Alfred, Rear-Admiral.” SHIPPING TELEGRAMS. Westport, November 7. IlCapt. Williams’ new s.s. Westport arrived hero from Cardiff, at 10.3 this morning, after a 26 days’ passage. She brings 10 passengers, all well.
