BOYS’ HIGH SCHOOL ATHLETIC SPORTS.
The first annual sports in connection with the Boys’ High School (Christchurch), were held last Friday, at Lancaster Park ground. There was a fair attendance of spectators, and each event was heartily contested. The following were tho results : Long Jump. A. Minchin, 15ft Bin 1 W. Montgomery, 15ft Sin ... 2 100 Yards, under fourteen ; Mrs Miller’s prize. P. Wood ... ... ... ... 1 L. Von Haast 2 100 Yards, over fourteen ; Mrs Miller’s prize. First Heat. H. Matson 1 G. Hart 2 Second Heat. J. Moir 1 W. Montgomery ... 2 The final heat resulted in a tie between H. Matson and G. Hart, which was run off later in the day, Matson winning, after a splendid race, by a foot. High Jump. J. Moir, 4ft 4in 1 H. Matson, 4ft 3in 2 120 Yards Hurdle Race (over eight flights). The prize for this event was a oup given by Messrs Garrick and Oowlishaw, to be won three years in succession before it becomes the property of the holder. First Heat. H. Matson and A, Minohin walked over, as the remaining five put down for this heat were scratched. Second Heat. J. Moir 1 H. W. Postlethwaite 2 The latter, though a much smaller boy, cleared all his hurdles very prettily. Four started. Final Heat. H. Matson 1 J. Moir .. 2 120 Yards; open to Boys under eleven. T. Burt 1 F. Johnston 2 The sturdy youngster who won this race had matters very much his own way, and trotted in with a smiling face. Qaarter-milo, open to the whole school. The prize, a cup given by Mr Miller, to be won three years’ in succession, before becoming the property of the holder. First Heat. H. Matson 1 G. Hart 2 Second Heat. D. Wood 1 J. Moir 2 Final Heat. H. Matson 1 G. Hart 2 Time, 67secs. The competitors in this race showed evident signs of fatigue, and were doubtless very glad, with the rest, to adjourn for lunch until 2 o’clock.
200 Yards Handicap. P. Wood (18yds) 1 H. Matson (syds) 2 The first boy ran very pluokily, and won by half a yard from Matson, three or four others being not far behind. Time, 24isecs. Half-mile Handicap, Mr Hogben’a Prize. C. Clark (25yd5)... 1 D. Wood (25yds) 2 A good race. Time, 2mm. 28seos. Throwing the Cricket Ball, E. Matson (77yda Sin) I W. G. Pox (74yda Ift Sin) ... 2 G. Hart, who wa* third, threw only one inch less than Fox. 2CO Yards, under thirteen. Mr Matson’s prize. I. Matson 1 A. Baird 2 The two ran away from the others, and kept very close together until 30 yard* from homo, when the winner came away. Quarter Mile, under fourteen. P. Wood 1 J. C. Miller 2 After a good level race into the straight Wood spurted, and won by about 3 yards. Milo Race. Mr Miller’s prize. O. Clark 1 G. Hart 2 It was a fairly even race for the first and second places, but the most exciting part of it was the game struggle which took place between the younger boys not to be last. Strangers’ Race, 220yds, open to members of Christ’s College. C. Cotterill 1 J. Hall 2 The visitors got off to a good start, and after a splendid race all the way Cotterill breasted the tape 6in in front of Hall. Time, 27sao. Mile Walk. H. Heywood 1 C. Clark 2 Time, 9min 43seo. Sack Race (100yds). Final Heat.
Q. Hart ~. 1 F. Watson 2 Much amusement was afforded, as usual, by the various modes of progression adopted by tho boys, and the mishaps which befell them by the way. Consolation Race (220yds). W. Montgomery ... ... 1
W. C. Fox ... .... ... 2 The prizes were then distributed by Mrs Miller, and a few words of welcome addressed to those present by Mr Miller. Tho Challenge Oup, given by the President of tho athletic sports, Mr W. Montgomery, for the greatest number of points scored by any competitor, was won by H. Matson. After rounds of cheers fer Mr Montgomery, the prize givers, and the ladies, tho company dispersed, having spent a thoroughly enjoyable day.
Count Q-leiohen’s two models of the excel* lent bust of Lord Boaconsfield now adorn the hall” of the Carlton Club. One is life size, and the other considerably smaller. “ Life ’ says a notice is appended to each that copies of either can be had on application to the secretary, the life size being sold at 25 guineas, ai d the other at 3i guineas.
