NORTHERN AGRICULTURAL AND PASTORAL ASSOCIATION.

The_ twelfth Show, under tho auspices of this Association, was held on tho grounds of the Association, Ashley road, near Bangiora, on Thursday last. The number of entries was in. excess of last year, and a most assuring interest was shown in the affairs of the society by the large gathering of people from all parts of the district. The weather was all that could be desired, and about 2000 persons must have during the day visited the Ehow. All the arrangements were perfect, reflecting credit upon the tact and judgment of the hon. secretary and his staff of coadjutors. The arrangement of the horses nnd cattle was similar to that followed last year. The Bheep were placed more to the centre of the yard, and the implements and manufactures were better displayed. The_ booths were placed in tho centre, the publicans' and luncheon tent being under the care of Mr Roberts, the well known caterer of tho Junction Hotel The dairy produce and smaller lecal manufactures were open to inspection in a large tent near the entrance to the ground. The local brass band contributed selections of music, relieved at intervals by th& hurdy gurdy man of the unicycle circus. The sheep classes were not quite so well represented as la-t year, but the quality as a rule, made up for any deficit in numbers. The merino exhibitors were Messrs R. Chapman, J. McFarlane, P. B. Dennis and G. Hossark, Mr Pearson's young ram and ewe rot being shown The former gentleman, with sheep exhibiting splendid fleeces, was the chief prizetaker, as well as the recipient of Mr KichoJl's special prize, and Messrs McGrath and Moody's special prize. The Leicester classes of the English breed were fully represented by Mr Threikeld'e flock, who was here the greatest prizetaker. Mr McFarlane secured the majority of the prizes for Border Leicesters, and Hen. H. B Gresson in keen competition with Mr Threlkeld took tho bulk of the awards for sheep of the Lincoln breed, which were proeented in first-class condition, except for ewe of any age, for which the prize was secured by Mr Pashby's fine ewe that last year yielded a fleece of 221bs, and its twin brother a fleece scaling 321bs. Messrs Buss and Duncan were the chief competitors in Romneys, but none of the sheep in this section called for special remark. In the classes for farmers' sheep Mr Sanson, for two pens of five ewes and lambs, took first and second, and Mr W. Pearson took the first prize as well as Hon. H. B. Gresson's special prize for a fine pen often ewa hoggets. In crossbreds, Mr Addinoll took first for five hoggets as well as for five fat wethers, which were shown in prime condition. 'I he cattle yarcs were better filled than last year, Mr Threlkeld and Hon. H. B. Gresson being the largest exhibitors. In tho aged bull class Commander in Chief was again first. Charming Duke second, Brigham Young highly commetd-.d, and a young bull Andrew commended. T he New Zealand Land and Mercantile Agency Company, with a neat animal, were winners of the class for two-year old bulls, and Mr Preece for the yearlings with a promising animal springing from Mr Threlkeld's stock. There was a keen competition in the cow class, which resulted in favor of Mr Threlkeld's Countess 111, his Lady second; out of the awo-year-old heifers Mr Gresson's Princess Royal was selected for the prize, [and in the yearling _ heifers Rod Rose, a very promisinganimal in all its parts. Mr Greeson's Buttercup, referred to last year, gained the highest award for milch cow, and a cow shown by Mr Skevington the prize for best cow for dairy purposes. Luxton Bros, took most of the prizes for fat catt'e ; Mr Hurse for the best three-year old steer. Mr Dalzell's bull Brigham Young obtained the special prize for farmer's bull, /and Mr W. Paterson's Andrew second, both animals being deserving of the position in which they were placed by the judges. Altogether the show of horses was hardly so good as has been previous! noticed. The blood entries were represented byHornby, Dtfan.er, and Admiral, the former of which obtained the coveted prize, though they were all brought out in good conditionOut of the trio of draught entires, which entered the ring Young Clyde deserved the honors of his class. Rantin fiobin snd Campsie HI. were well shown, and regret was expressed all round at the untoward circumstance which led to the absence of Kilbowie. The two three-year-old draught entries wore very promising horses. Sir G. Grey, by the Governor, out of Bonny, was a well made horse, and has already been a winner of four przes. In the two-year-olds Mr Moffat's horse by Clyde is a well set up animal, and ought to come out with advantage. There was only one brood mare with foal shown, and the latter did not find much favor, though the dam was worthy of the priz9. Mr Wyllie's promising filly Nell, by the Governor, took the honors of the three-year-old class, and Mr Wallace's colt, by the Governor, tha first ticket in tha two year-olds. Mr Moffat's yearling colt, by Clyde, beat four others and Mr McParlane's filly was tho winner in tne class for yearling fillies. Mr Peach's pair of fine mares took the prize for the pair which had been in regular work, and Mr Dillon's gelding, by Prince of Wales, the prize in class for single mare or gelding. Tho hackney entires were represented by Young Priam and Young Performer, the former being adjudged the prize taker, through the latter being considered rather small for carriage purposes. There was a paucity of brood mares, and only one exhibit. Eight competed in the class for roadsters, Mr Hurse's Senex winning the ribband, and Mr Bamberger's Miss Crispin, a beautiful chesnut, taking the honors of tha class for lady's hacks against eight competitors. The ponys were a very good lot, Mr McGrath's Nobby winring in the large class. Dr. Downes' carriage gelding, Charlie, and Mr Seaton's Medica, greatly admired, as well as Mr Stevens* carrier's horsa Jasper. The Leaping match was witnessed with great interest, tho entries being Mr J. Hurse's Senex and Beggamon, G. Simpson's Waimote Jack, H. Murfit's Dick Turpin, G. Mannering's Lunatic, G. Einley's Pat, J. Fulton's Grey, and T. Hodgson's Black Bess. Tho hurdles were made on the same principle and acted wed. Black Bess, the winner, surprised everyone, being a horse which, appeared better fitted to take one side of a plough than clear jumps going up to five feet in height. Dick Turpin came second. There was a splendid show of pigs of all classes, and keen competition, but it seemed a pity when the 6un was so scorching that their pens had not been placed in a line along the shade of tho fence, as some of tho poor animals suffered severely. Messrs Gibbs and Luxton's boars in the class for boars of any age were tremendous fe'lows, and all the prizetakers may be congratulated upon the keenness of the contests. Tho poultry were fairly represented, there being some good dorkings and brahmas, as well as ducks, exhibited. Five sheep dogs were entered, Mr King's Bob again taking first in rough hairs, and Mr Voss' Jack in smooth haired kinds. There was a pretty fair display of_ implements made by Messrs Duncan, Little, rTeetly, and others, including ploughs and harrows. The Osborne and McCormick harvesters competed, the latter being awarded a first and the fovmer a second prize. The Bearing machine*.

■with its latest improvements, had not conw to hand. Mr Blackett exhibited a number of implements and tools of various kinds, which were inspected with a deal of interest. Mr J. Johnstan also was an exhibitor to a fair extent of anricnltnral implements, including the Eureka direct mower. The show of butter waa exceptionally good, Mrs A. Grcig taking the fresh butter aw.wrd ; but there was hardly any competition for the cheese prizo. Mr I'.llea a bacon received the highest award, and Mr Konceoj a hams. Dressed Six waa shown by Messrs heed and Chinnery, that of the former, bcicß finer, toak the prize. Uh rope was also pronounced to be very gold. *ir Hossack 8 shift and leading, a 3 well as gL( hsrncs-i, received first awards. A caso of boots in this tent received general remarks of praise for the excollonce of their manufacture. There w&s a fair show of drain pipes and earthenware. Sim, les of liaseod were exhibited which had been locally grown by three exhibitors, and a supsrbr sample of ale from the Burton Brewery, tfnyman Bros, gained a priza for biniliag twine, sold wholesale at 841, and otter koo.l samples wcro shown by Messrs Seed, Pearce, and hinnery. Among, the extra exhibits Mr Silfceld's, cabinet work in drawers and chtff.Miidr made from kauri white pine and honeysuckle woods woo admired, «nd iicott Bros.' rat'g sraune in for a Urge fchare of attention.
