LYTTELTON HARBOR BOARD.
The above Board held its ordinary meeting at Lyttelton yesterday, at 2 p.m., when there were present—Hon. E. Richardson (chairman), Messrs C. W. Turner, H. Sawtell, H. P. Murray-Aynsloy, E. Q. Wright, E. Allan, and H. Allwright. The Chairman delivered his usual summary of tho business transacted and to come before the meeting. Since the last meeting the sum of £18,094 2s 3d had been placed to the Board's credit. The credit balance at current acoount was £16,121 7s, and a fixed deposit of £50,000 matured on January 2nd, ISB2. The Chairman alluded to the question of a sailors' home, and detailed tho action taken by him in the matter. Mr Turpjn's report upon tho relative value of Westport and Newcastle coal had been received, and was 15 per cent, in favor of the local coal. The engineer's report was read. He recommended the carrying out of tho work whioh is to supersede Pcaoock'e wharf. A beacon was requirod by the harbor master on the western breakwater, and it could bo made of material in hand for about £ls. A slip of earth had occurred at tho head of the dock, and tho contractors had been instructed to cut down and slope tho earth. He recommended the erection of four chains of picket fencing, and that the side of the road be channelled with concrete for three chains. Tho dock works wero proceeding satisfactorily. A telegram had been received from Messrs 801 l and Miller on October 22nd, stating that the caisson had been shipped. The harbor improvement oommittee reported that it was advisable not to let the dock for the first year after completion, and had instructed the secretary to ascertain the system under which similar docks were worked elsewhere. A letter had been sent to the railway engineer's department urging that traversers bo placed at the oxtreme end of Nos. 1 and 2 jotties. iho erection of a stage and winoh upon the faoe of the reclaimed land opposite Loutett'e old slip, for the purpose of landing ballast, was recommended, the coat to be about £SO. The committee abo recommended the ereotion of two additional sets of steps at the boat landings, at an estimated coat of £32.
IL was moTed by Mr Wright, Beeonded by Mr Sawtell, and carried—" That the recommendation made in the harbor improvement committee's report, No. 15, be approved; also that the temporary repairs to Poacocli's wharf be carried out at once ; that the question of oarrying out 120 feet low-level breastwork to the immediate westward of Peacock's
wharf be referred to the harbor improvement committee to report on at the Board'a next meeting ; aleo as to the wharfage accommo-dation-required between the tunnel wharf and Peacock's wharf."
Accounts amounting to £7094 Us lOd wer» passed for pajment.—On the motion of Mr Allan, seconded by Mr Allwright, the usual grant to the Borough Oou' cil for water and fire prevention services of £IOO was passed. A lengthy discussion took place upon the question of the establishment of a sailor** home. The telegrams that had passed between the chairman ar.d the Government upon the subject were read, and ultimately the matter was deferred for further consideration till the 17th inat, the Board to meet in Ohristcburcb.
