ELLESMERE SHOW.
The ninth annual Show of the Eileamera Agricultural and Pastoral Association was held on Tuesday in the grounds of the Association at Leeston, the entries a-.d attendance at which were largely in excess of previous years. In the sheep there was improvement both in numbers and quality in all classes, but there was a lack of anything like decent competition, as reference to the prize list will show. In the Lincolns an unnatural dryness in yolk was apparent. This was attribu'ed partly to an unfavorable spring, or it might result from bad feed. Perhaps the most noticeable ram in this breed was one shown by Mr C. Withell, being very level, and showing lots of good quality. Mr C. T. Dudley’s Lincoln ewes were also well bred, as too were Mr Henry Overton’s. The Komneys were but moderate. In Southdowns Mr 0. Lewis had it all his own way, his Shropshire Downs being very good indeed. In fat sheep Mr John Eennie’s exhibits were very symmetrical well-bred specimens of the Leicester cross, with very fine heads. The lambs shown were nicely grown, but, as in tho sheep, the dry yolk was very apparent. In entile the reputation of tho district was fully sustained. In horses the thoroughbred entries were fittingly headed by tho well-known Hornby, who took tho first prize in his class, and also the special prize of £3 3s, given by Mr J. K. Campbell ; whilst in tho class for carriage horses Mr P. O’Boylo took first prize for his fine entire Snowdon. The hackney and pony classes were well represented. In the draught class, as might bo expected, the competition was keen, and the judges had no easy task. Where so many good horses were to the fore it is hard to particularise, but Prince Koyal and his progeny were very noticeable. Wo missed old Qlenroy, who was enquired for by several, as he is an old prizotaker on the Ellesmere ground. The exhibits of Mr Gilmour and also those of Mr D. Scott wore very good indeed. Tho implements was a capital exhibition, local talent being fully displayed. The dairy produce was beyond all praise, and in tho butter exhibits the judges had great difficulty, ns all were so nearly good alike as to make it hard to say which was best. The grain shown proved what a grand corn growing district tho Ellesmere is, the rod, purple, and whits tuscans, and also tha velvet
chaff and pearl varieties, being well adapted to the soils of this locality. The barley was magnificent, and Mr Coo’s exhibit of oats all that could be possibly desired, having yielded seventyfive bushels to tho aero on that gentleman’s farm last season. The wool exhibits wore hardly up to tho average. Subjoined is the PRIZE LIST.
SIIEEP. (All classes are open to imported or Now Zealand bred sheep, unless otherwise specified, and, with tho exception of fat sheep, all must be shown in their wool. The date of last shearing to bo given when the entry is made. No restrictions as to feediug.)
