A fish hawker namod Thomas Hunter was found dead in bed. WELLINGTON, Ootober 31. AppointmentMr B. P. Bailey, oattle inspector for the Marlborough district, has been appointed superintendent for the colony for carrying out the Babbit Act. The French in the Pacific. Two documents received by the Governor, one from the chiefs of Raratonga and the other from influential English residents, as to the alleged interference of a French man-of-war vessel, are published. GREYMOUTH, October 31. Bevenue The Customs duties for October were £2440, and for the corresponding month in 1880, £3499. BEEETON, October 31.
Mining. The United Alpine Company obtained for the week 200 ounces of amalgam from 183 tons of quartz. Pour slopes are opened on tho reef, which continues to widen out and carries good gold. The Welcome Company's return for the week is 1014 ounces amalgam from ninety-five tons of quartz. Some shares changed hands to-day at £7, the highest price they have yet reached. The Golden Treasure Company's yiold for tho week is ninety-seven ounces ten pennyweights amalgam from 100 tons quartz. The winze is down forty-five feet from the bottom of the old winze, and carrying a good show of gold. The Bleep itDark stone continues to improve in quality as the cross cut extends towards the foot wall. The Just-in-Time Company met with stone showing good gold during the week. The fiery Cross Extended Company will be crushing for a few weeks. TIMARTJ, Ootober 31. Spirited Undertaking. Mr Moss Jonas, proprietor of the Theatre Royal, is making extensive additions to tho building, which, when completed, will make it one of the finest of its class in the colony. Vital Statistics. During the month of October, 41 births, 3 marriages, and 9 deaths were registered in the Ximaru district. Customs. The Customs revenue for the month of Ootober was £I2BB 6j 103, as against £1566 8j 6d for the corresponding month of last year. The Water Supply. To-day, at the invitation of his Worship tho Mayor (Oapt*in Sutter), a large number of influential citizens visited the dam at the head of the waterworks to witness the turning on of the water into the rase leading to the town. Tho race is fully twenty miles long. DTJNEDIN, Ootober 31. sTew Gold ReefA payable reef of gold is said to have been found near Dunetsn, rough gold showing all through the stone. Sporting. The "Times " has issued an extra showing the betting on the Melbourne Cup as follows : —Darebin and Waxy, 5 to 1, much fancied ; Bathurst, Savanaka, and Yoss, 8 to 1 ; Santa Olaus, 12 to 1; Sir Modred, 20 to 1. The bookmakers were heavily hit on Saturday.
Mishaps at Sea. During the passage of the ship Otaki from London, a seaman named T. Weaton committed suicide, and W. Stream . was waahed overboard. The aea was too rough to attempt his resoue. INVEROARGILL, Ootober 31. Accidental Death. A fine young man, named John Macnamara, was killed this morning by a fall of gravel in a pic near town. Vital Statistics. During the month eixty-one births, twolve marriages, and twenty-two deaths were registered in the Invercargill district.
