After the addresses a number and variety of questions were put to tost the candidates, which, having been answered, and a deal of good humored chaff exchanged, a vote of thanks, on the motion of Mr (J. Smith, seconded by Mr B. Woodford, was carried by acclamation. It was currently reported after the meeting that a third candidate would bo invited to coma forward. A large number of the electors do not find their views accord with the candidates offering themselves. A Sailors’ Home.— For some time past negotiations for establishing a Sailors’ Home at Port have been going on between those chiefly interested in shipping matters. The matter has, however, taken jno definite shape up to the present, but Mr H. Allwright, of Lyttelton, having the proposal at heart, communicated with the Government, asking it an institution ct the kind would be assisted. This morning ho received a telegram to the effect that Government was prepared to give .£1 for ever .£1 up to JESOO, towards the object, if a suitable building lor a Home was erected.

Electoral —A meeting of Mr W. P. Cowliahaw’e committee will bo held at the committeerooms, corner of East belt and Hereford street, on Monday evening next, at eight o’clock. .Legal —Yesterday his Honor Mr Justice Johnston admitted Mr H. J. Raphael as a barrister and solicitor of the Supreme Court, and congratulated him The Railway Employes’- Pay Day.— ln

compliance with an expressed wish of some of the railway employes at .Lyttelton, Mr Allwright. U.H.8., communicated with the Secretary of Railways, from whom ho this morning received the following telegram :—“ Be your telegram of yesterday, the Hon. Mr Hall directs me to siy that he has enquired and finds that the rule at present is to pay all casual laborers of every class fortnightly, bnt permanent hands are always paid monthly, the same as the remainder of the permanent staff. The adoption of a fortnightly (payment at Lyttelton would mean an extension of the practice to the whole system of railways,!which wou'd necessitate a reorganisation of the railway accounts, and would further involve considerable alteration in the treasury ragn’ations. Mr Hannay, who has been consulted, is in a position to state from personal experience that the majority of the permanent staff are in favor of monthly payments.”

The Electoral 801 l op Lyttelton.— A considerable number of foreigners’ names have been added to tho new electoral roll at Port, and, as aliens are disqualified from voting at the election, it would be as well that all foreigners should send in to tho Begistrar’a office their naturalization papers before tho polling day takes place. In also, with tho now roll, some discrepancies i» tho spelling of names may have crept in, and, to prevent any difficulty arising on the day on which overy duly qualified citizen expects to exercise his “ inestimable privilege,” each elector should see that his name appears properly upon tho roll. If it does not, tho Registrar should be notified of the fact.

Concert, —A very enjoyable concert was given last evening in tho Congregational schoolroom by the pupils of Mr Oorriek. Tho programme included a number of vocal and instrumental items, all of which were admirably carried out, evincing tho care and skill which had been bestowed upon the pupils by their preceptor. Pioneer Bicycle Club.—The usual general monthly meeting of tho Pioneer Bicycle Club was held at headquarters last night, when there was a largo attendance of members. Two new members were nominated, and Mr Allison was elected a committeeman in place of Mr Spencer, resigned. Lecture.— The Bev. M. W. Green, cf Dunedin, delivered a lecture at the Oddfellows’ Hall last evening on the subject of “ Our Anglo-Saxon ancestry historically identified with the Israelites.” The lecture was in continuation of one delivered on Tuesday evening on the “British nation and the lost ton tribes,” both lectures being given under tho auspices of the Christchurch British-Israel Association. There was a very ;ood attendance, and the chair was taken by bis Worship the Mayor, who, it was explained, occupied the position in bis official capacity, and not as in any way identified with the association. The lecture was very interesting, and was listened to with great attention, the rev. gentleman being frequently applauded. After describing the migrations of the Israelites on their expulsion from Judah to their location in tho valley of the Caucasus, the lecturer sought to identify them with tho Scythians, and so trace them westward to the British Isles. Ho claimed that the study of the British-Israel theory would furnish a key to historical inquiry that would lead to results now only faintly foreshadowed, such, for instance, as the identification of the British people, through the Danites, with the besiegers of Ancient Troy. Is would also throw considerable light upon prophecies of the Old Testament, which would be otherwise obscure. At tho conclusion of the lecture Mr Green replied to one or two questions, after which he was accorded a, hearty vote of thanks. A similar compliment to the chairman concluded the proceedings. The secretary, Mr W. T. O. Mills, read the annual report as follows : " Your committee, in presenting their annual report, regret that they cannot congratulate the society on any increase of entries or receipts). The entries in poultry show a very large decrease, and this is particularly noticeable in the Game, Cochins, and Brahma classes, as will be seen by the annexed statement for 1880 and 1881 respectively : —Game, 76, 55 ; Dorkings, 46, 39 ; Cochins, 36, 19 ; Langshans, 12, 11; Polish, 2,4; Malay, 11, 2 ; Spanish, 14, 18 ; Brahmas, 41, 22 ; Hamburghs, 12, 14; Houdans, 2, 3 ; Bantams, 13, 17 ; any other variety, 6, 1.
