[PER PRESS ASSOCIATION.J AUCKLAND, October 27. Native Burglars. The Natives concerned in breaking and entering a store at Awihu have been committed for trial. Canoe Club. A canoe olnb has been formed similar to those of Lyttelton and other Southern ports. Highly Interesting. Mr F. J. Moss, M.H.R., and Mr Leary, late Mayor of Dunedin, have been inspecting Hokianga district. Both aro much pleased with the country. They went over the endowments’toAuckland, Parnell and Onehunga, and Funikatero, which Mr Moss says are very good. For Active Service. Major Morrow called a meeting of Volunteers to-night to osoortain what number are willing to volunteer in tho corps under his command for active service. About ten volunteered. Major Derrom has called a meeting for to-morrow of all corps, including tho Engineers and Artillery, to express their views as to the desirability or otherwise of volunteering in a body under their respective officers. NAPIER, October 27.
Sporting. The following is the programme for the Jockey Club’s autumn meeting, to bo held on the 16th and 17th of March :—First day— Maiden, li miles, 60 sovs. Corinthian Cup, 2 miles, 50 sove. Napier Handicap, 1J miles, SCO sovs. Nursery Plate, 5 furlongs, for two-year-olds, 100 sovs. Railway Stakes Handicap, f-mile, 125 sovs. Second day— Provincial Produce Stakes, 1 mile, 60 sovs. Hurdles, 2} miles, 150 sovs. Tradesmen’s Handicap, li miles, 200 sovs. Hawke’s Bay Plate, 2 miles, 100 sovs. Consolation, 50 sovs. Total added money, £1435. The proprietor of the “ Mail ” has been threatened by Mr William Dale, a candidate for tho mayoralty, with criminal proceedings, unless a retraction and apology are published for an alleged libel, WELLINGTON, October 27. Appointments. Mr J. S. Cooper has been appointed clerk of writs, and Mr Hugh Pollen deputy clerk. Reduction of Rates. The revised tariff of charges on New Zealand Railways is gazetted. Returning Officers. The following returning officers have been appointed for elections in counties in which the Act is not in operation : —Ashley, Waipara, Alexander Lean ; Mount Thomas, Michael Lynskey; >Kowai, H. At a meeting of the engineers to-night it was unanimously resolved to offer their services to go to the front as a rifle corps. Thirtyfive who were willing to go handed in their names, exclusive of several strangers who wish to enlist.
DUNEDIN, October 27.
At a meeting of the company to-night, twenty-five of the Naval Brigade volunteered for active service in the field. Colonel Stavdoy first addressed the men and told them they must not expect child’s play. It is expected that tho contingent will bo augmented by thirty from Port Chalmers. From the Diggings. Gold to the value of £22,000 was brought from the Goldfields district to day. FireRoche’s Hotel, near A-Wowtown, was burnt last night, and nothing was saved. It was insured in tho Norwich Union for £SOO. New Industry. The first gunpowder manufactured by Mr Jnc. MoLeay, at Owake Mills (116 packages), was brought to port to day. Tho samples were favorably spoken of. Mineral Deposits. A prospecting lease has boon applied for consequent on tho discovery of coal in conjunction with deposits of fire clay and hematite. The Irreconcibles. At tho Trade and Labor Council last evening it was resolved to adopt the following political platform With regard to the Crown lands, that they should be leased only, and not sold ; land already sold to be taxed ; encouragement of local industry ; tho eight hours system to be legalised; no further immigration ; technical education to bo added lo the present system ; an Employers Liability Act; prohibition of tho instruction in skilled labor in prisons ; local option, and the abolition of bottle licenses ; law reform.

Regarding the French Consul’s disclaimer as to the intentions of hia Government to establish a Protectorate over Rarotonga, I am in a position to state that the original report was forwarded on distinct official reports, and supported by tho strongest documentary and verbid evidence. ASHBURTON, October 27. Ten recruits were added to-night to the Ashburton Rifles. Twenty men have volunteered for the front.
