WANGANUI SPRING MEETING. WANGANUI, October 21. At the Wanganui Spring Meeting there was a large attendance, and the course was in splendid condition. Maiden Plate, of .£SO. Eily 1 Taipo 2 Desoition ... 3 Eight started. Eily was the favorite. C met cut out the running, with Taipo next, and Eily fourth. This order was observed for half a mile, when Eily went on next to Taipo, and the pair passed Comet, who was beaten. Taipo led until just before entering the straight, when Eily came away, and won easily by three lengths, with the same distance between second and third. Time, 2min. 48sccs. Handicap Hurdles of £SO. Angler ... ... 1 Monk ... 2 Hawthorne 3

This was a very pretty race, the jumping being good throughout. Angler held back till the last quarter of a ur'e, when he reu up to Monk, and the latter jumping tmkindly at the last hurdle, a'lowcd Angler to secure the lead, and won by two lengths. distance. There were four entries Tricotrin, Gang Away, Simpleton, and Hazel. Gang Away and Simpleton cut out the running, but both fell at the fourth hurdle and were put out of it. Tricotrin assumed the lead and kept it, winning by three lengths. There were £26 in the totalisator. Wanganui Stakes Handicap of £l5O. Two miles and a distance. Mr Ruddock’s Merlin, 7st 21b ... ... 1 Mr Brewer’s Venture, 7st 31b... ... ... 2

Mr Walters’ Slander Filly, 6st 71b ... ... 3 Mufti, Dan, Blue Gown, Miss Emma, Merlin, Tartar, Angler, Slander Filly, and Tally Ho started. The field was got away well together, with Venture and the Slander Filly leading slightly. The first time past the Stand the Slander Filly was loading, with Venture second, and Angler third. The positions were unchanged during the second round, but on passing the quarter milepost Venture came up and went to the front, followed closely by Merlin, a splendid struggle between these two ensuing. Entering tbe straight, it was hard to say which would prove the victor, but Merlin bring jndicionsly let out, came away, and won by a length and a half, Venture second, Slander third. Time, 4min. ll.Ssecs. £326 were in the totaliaator, and £4O on the winner. Railway Plate of £SO. One and-a-half miles.

Mr Walters’ Grand Duchess, 9st2lb. Mr Morse’s Astronomer, Oat 21b

Mr Chetham’s Dan, 9st 31ba 3 Mufti, Dan. Banshee, Grand Duchess, Astronomer, and Venture faced the starter. The start was a very bad one, Grand Duchess and Banshee jumping away with a good lead, and Mufti and Venture hanging on the post. The order in which they passed the grand stand was—Grand Duchess, Astronomer, Banshee, Dan, Mufti, and Venture., Grand Duchess having a lead of half a length, and the rest of the field being close together. At tbe quarter Venture looked dangerous, but his effort did not last, and he fell away again. Dan then passed Banshee, and the order was Grand Duchess, Astronomer, Banshee, Venture, Mufti. Dan challenged Astronomer in the straight, but could not head him. The other places were unchanged. Grand Duchess won easily by three lengths. Time, 2min. 54 l-sth secs. The totalisator showed £251, £96 being gou Grand Duchess.
