fBETITBB’S TELEGRAMS.] MELBOURNE, October 19. A lame Excuse. It has now transpired that Thorpe, late teller of the Bank of Victoria, who was arrested yesterday charged with embezzling £2500, was recently suspended, and has since that time returned the whole amount (£2500) in hatches to his successor. He asserts that, although he had used the money, he did not intend stealing it. Mr Thorpe, late teller of the Bank of Victoria, was brought up at the Police Court to-day charged with embezzlement. The case was remanded for a week, bail being allowed. It has transpired that the prisoner had invested money in a building society. Sporting There is no change to report in the betting on the Melbourne Cup. Czar’s price is 25 to 1.
