The local newspapers have been hoaxed several times lately by bogus matrimonial advertisements. Meat Preserving Company. The Auckland Meat Preserving Company is about to send a trial shipment to England. WELLINGTON, Ootober 18. Electoral. Mr Travers withdraws from the contest for Te Aro.
Fire. The house of Mr W. N. Whiteman, of Carnarvon, was burnt to the ground at twelve o'olock last night. Some of the furniture was saved. The property was insured in the National offioe for £4OO. Ministerial. Mr Oliver was sworn in as a member of the Exeoutive Council to-day. HAMILTON, Ootober 18. Electoral. Mr M'Minn to-day formally notified his candidature for Waipa. The Canterbury Show. Mr Fantham proceeded today en route with three pure-bred shorthorn bulls for ex* hibition at the Canterbury Show. The animals are Sir Hercules, calved October, 1878, by Duke of Newcastle, dam Anemone, by Earl of Derby (58502); Sir Eveny, calved January, 1881, by Bir Hercules, dam Belle 2nd by Boyal Grogmore (32390); and Grand Duke of Cambridge, oalved August, 1880, by Lord Darlington 2nd (196 N.Z.H.8.) dam Grand Duchess of Hal* combe by Bth Duke of York (28480). Native Industry. Tawhaio and Bewi's people are still busy putting in potatoes. They have now twelve ploughs at work in the township of Mangapiko.
