AMATEUR ATHLETIC CLUB MEETING.
The second day's sports of the Canterbury Amateur Athletio Club, which took plaoe yesterday, were fairly attended, considering the unpleasant nature of the day, a strong cold easterly breeze making out door sight-seeing anything but pleasant. The various events were, as on the first day, well contested, and generally sport throughout was good. The folio wins; is the record of what took place : One Hundred Yards Flat Race (final heat.) J. S. Smith 1 F. N. Robinson 2 Webb, Hawkes, Miles, and Anderson also ran. This was a splendid race, all coming at a rare bat. Close to the tape Smith and Robinson shot out from the rest and the former won by about a foot, the remainder close up. Time, 10 3 sths sec. High Jump. F. N. Robinson (sft) 1 W. Newton (4ft llin) 2 Hall (4ft lOin) 3 Robinson took his jumps very cleanly, and had a lot in hand at the finish. One Hundred and Twenty Yards Handicap, for Boys at Christ's College and High School. G. Palmer (2yds) t C. Hamilton (Byds) t Miller and Haast also ran. This resulted in a dead heat between Palmer and Hamilton. Time, 12iseos. Deciding Heat. C. Hamilton (Byds) 1 G. Palmer (2yds) 2 Hamilton made the pace pretty warm, and won by half a yard. Time, 12 2-sth sees. Ona Hundred and Twenty Yards Handicap Flat Race. Final Heat. W. J. Webb (syds) 1 L. Neville (Byds) 2 Helmore and Alabaster also ran. Webb soon came through his leaders, and made the running, winning by a yard, with Neville a good second. Four Hundred and Forty Yards' Flat Race. J. S. Smith 1 F. N. Robinson 2 A. H. Alabaster 3 Robinson took the lead, with Smith seoond and Alabaster third. After a short distance had been gone Alabaster went out. At the turn into the straight run Smith challenged Robinson and took the lead, ultimately winsing by three yards. Time, 56secs. Two Miles Walking Race. A. L. Smith 1 G. Hanmer 2 Dunoan and Ford also started. Smith walked splendidly and won as he liked by about fifty yards. Time, 17min 10£secs. 120 Yards Hurdle Race. (Final heat). F. N. Eobinson 1 C. Nowton 2 F. Miles, M. Davie, and Knight, also ran. Those three collided at the last hurdle and fell, though Robinson and Newton were well ahead. Time, 20secs. Half-mile Flat Race. A. S. Baker 1 M. Davie 2 A. Longden ... 3 This was a pretty easy win for Baker. Time, 2min losco. Tug of War. Colonial team (H. A. Knight, capt.) 1 English team (F. Wilding, capt.) ... 0 The Colonials had all the best of it, and made pretty short work of their opponents. Throwing the Hammer (weight 161 b). W. Willia (92ft) 1 C. C. Corfe (83ft lOin) 2 F. N. Robinson (71£t lin) 0 J. S. Smith (70ft lin) 0 Willis threw splendidly, his first throw being 86ft siin, and his next 88ft ljin. This he topped amid loud plaudits with the throw recorded above. 250 Tarda Flat Race (final heat). Zi. A. Hawkes... ... ... ... 1 F. N. Robinson 2 J. S. Smith 3
This was a fine race, and was won by Hawkos almost on the tape, a game struggle ensuing between the three first up the straight run. Time, 28 3 sth sees. Pole Jump. J. Partridge (10ft) 1 G. B. Hales (7ft 6in) 2 Partridge, who jumped splendidly, had it all his own way and won easily. Two Mile Flat Race. A. 8. Baker 1 J. W. Davis 2 This was an easy victory for Baker, who won as he liked. Time, llmin 2iseca. 440 Yards Handicap Hurdle Race. J. Partridge (15 yards) 1 W. P. Studholme (8 yards) 2 F. N. Robinson (scratch) 3 This was a capital race, and was won by Partridge in good style, Studholme running in excellent form for second place. Time, lmin 9mm. This closed the sports. The ladies' challenge cup has been won by P. ST. Robinson with ten points; A. S. Baker coming next with tight, and J. S. Smith with seven.
