[PBB PBESB ASSOCIATION,! THAMES, Ootober 17. Mining. The tributers of the Smile of Fortune, O whoroa, completed their term on Saturday. It is expected that they have a return of from 1800 to 2000ozs. This has been accumulated since the retort i-jg, a few weeks ago. Then the party obtained 1300ozs. The company intend to work the mine and battery themselves, and have appointed Mr John Moore, manager. News from Te Aroha confirms the reports as to the excellence of the quartz reefs discovered. AUCKLAND, October 17. A Try-on. The dispute between Charles King and the New Zealand Land Company concerning the purchase of 800 acres of land at Patatere, ended in the company relinquishing its claim to it. A New Importation* The C?ty of Sydney brought a quantity of corn broom for Auckland and Sydney, for oorn broom manufacture. Unprofitable Litigation. The case of G. S. Jakins v the Government, claim £6OO, for loss of water frontage by the ereotion of the reclamation sea wall, ended in the Court giving no award, eaoh party to pay their own costs. This decides other pending cases. A Precocious Boy. The boy Jenkins, who stabbed the lad Alexander Gratton with a penkife, was discharged from custody, Gratton's father desiring not to press the charge. WELLINGTON, October 17. Bisks of Shipowning. The Supreme Court was occupied all day in hearing a oivil case, Geo. Georgenson v the master and owners of the barque Malay. The action was brought to reoover £2OOO damages, for injuries alleged to have been received through the negligence of defendants' servants. Plaintiff was a passenger to Newcastle by the Malay, and during the voyage a blook fell from aloft and struok him on the hand, necessitating the amputation of three fingers. The jury gave a verdict for £IOO. Land Sale. The amount reoeived for land sold a Hawera was—Cash sales, £12,627 16s; deferred payments, £7514 8s 2d. Oat SaleTwo thousand sacks of good feed Meadow Bank oats were sold to-day by Messrs Oroskery, Hasell and Co. at 2s par bushel. Mining. The mining manager of the Albion Mining Company, Terawhiti, reports that the stone is improving, and the prospeote of the company are most encouraging. The late Native MinisterMr Bryce is in Wellington, and has been in consultation with Ministers to-day. DUNEDIN, October 17. A Successful Whaling Ship. The whaler Splendid arrived on Saturday, bringing eighty-five tons of sperm and seventy tons humpbaok oil, after a cruise one week less than twelve months. Crime. At the Police Court to-day George Bowley was charged with bigamy. A remand was asked for to allow evidence to be brought from South Australia, where the accused was first married. The oonstable who arrested the accused in Ohristchurch deposed that he admitted being married to two women right enough, and if the warrant had not come he would have been off to Sydney to the second wife. In Court accused said that the first marriage was not legal. He was remanded for one week; bail allowed. [fbom the own cobbespondknt the op " pbbsb."J WELLINGTON, Ootober 17. Mr Oliver is to be sworn in to-morrow before Sir James Pendergoet. He remains a few days in Wellington.
