THE PARIHAKA MEETING.
[PBBBB ASSOCIATION TBIBSBAM.J PUNGABEHTJ, October 17. The monthly meeting at Parihaka was held to-day. The returned prisoners having marched in, Te Whiti commenced his address at ten o'clock, as follows : —God has always been living up to this time. The world was made by God long ago. These days have come to this generation. The quarrel has come forward to this generation, and the years have oome forward. This day several generations have passed by, and several troubles have passed by. One has come to us now. The sins of man will be beaten. Thousands of seeds have slipped away, seeds of kumara and seeds of wheat. All seeds have departed; the seed of Israel has departed. In this day will be made new the quarrelling which in ancient times was uplifted. Now it will be renewed. Up to this day it rests on mo. The head of the sin will will be broken this day. Our generation has been brought up, and in this day it will not be undone. The heel of Eve was bitten by the serpent. The light will not enter to any man. This day the sun will' not shine ; darkness will be over the land. The largest stars of heaven will not give their light; the stripe will not be uplifted from Eve to this day. At my work the fishes wriggle in the sea, the earth shakes, and the sea quivers. The blood of the prophets is laying on the earth and will shake every generation. It is not a great nation nor a large hand that will put down the power this day. It is caused by God. The great nation and the little nation will diminish this day. There will not be peace in this day; there Is no one to sooth my trouble, not until it is finished and the hand of God otretches forth and raises up this generation. If you are cutting a tree it is the hand of man lifts the axe. If left to lie it will be rusted. The hands of Israel lifted our nature. This axe will be sharp, but the other will be left and rusted. It is I who end speaking. The hen's nest that is left a small child may break the eggs, and the chicken will have no mother to watch them. This talk is true in this year. It was said in ancient time, Do not be frightened, listen to this word, the trouble be uplifted. In this day strife will make it straight. Nothing else will make it straight but strife. It does not matter if thousands atand at Pungarehu, they will be broken. Peace has been on earth by me, but it has not been listened to by great nations. If you are vexed about your land come to me, come close, I will not listen to the law, because within my heart I am dark. This day every year I have been saying be patient. If it is she spade that is in your hand, strike. No matter what is in your hand, strike with it. My heart is dark within mo. If the land is black with men it will shake them off. This platform will be always full from one generation to another. If Pungarehu be dug with trenches, or filled with guns, it will be broken, it will not be left for another generation. If the Maori looks for good he will not find it. All the kings on earth will shout when this happens. It will be done in this day. My word will be the law in this day. The law will be straight, it will not be turned to the north or the south. What I have said in any direction, there is only us to keep the law, and keep it straight. What I have said is never to look at the height or the strength. It will all be broken down. There will not be any work of man left this day ; not one good thing by man will be left. It will be all turned away and destroyed. Listen. The strength of man has all departed from this year. The great man, the strong man, the wealthy man, he will not be understood. This day he must oome to me. The guß will not be a proteotor for man in this day. Man must not look to the gun, the sword, or the spear, for safety. The tomahawk and the sword will not be left for man this day. Let the man understand j let the King understand. The entrenohment will be all filled in ; the money will not be left ; the gun will be gone. God will bo on earth in these days for ever and ever. The rioh and the full man must depart. It will not be a year, but to-day the strife will be on earth. The spear will not be for a man. Every generation must be crushed ; there will not be one left. The man that comes to strike will be killed himself. This hand is small, but every generation will be broken this day. This day will be one of boasting. There is no one will subdue me, for I am determined. I am angry. The trouble will be for man and for all generations. My word will not be turned away from the north to the south. The gun will be broken. The name only of the land that used to be ours is left this day. The sea will dry up and the four parts of the earth will shake ; thousands of men at Pungarehu wiil fall this day. Te Whiti then retired and Tohu spoke—lt was long ago that the law was laid down for this congregation of people ; long ago it was established. It is not my talk, neither is it my pointing out. The morning and evening are talking this day. Great is man this day. Strife is not new long ago. It is not me or you that have the strength this day, but God. We are only talking—talking about strife. Now there is no one to quiet me; there is only one day in front, that is all. The fence is in front of you. All the sins of man have been paid for by the blood of man that has been spilt. There is only darkness this day. All great men oome here and white people, they will not meet together. Long Bgo it was appointed by God. I have said trouble has come in front of me this day. There is no one to question me. Hundreds and thousands that come to fight with me will all be dispersed. This gathering cannot be broken up by thousands or millions. If thousands come to Pungarehu they will be dispersed by this assembly. This word is true. We will go and be the ones to meet those that are ooming. If it is like other times what use is there in more talking. In the
midst of us, like others, there have been two things left one generation to another—the money and the gun. The gun will not be left for man to play with; the guns and money will vanish. God is standing upon earth this day for this generation. This word that has been said is true. There is no one to keep peace. lam dark this day. Long ago this was laid down. lam a dark man ; I will not be quieted. Not one Maori man will be able to soothe me. If he oome to quiet me I will not look at him. It is darkness with me; that is why I say so. I am not trying to soothe any man in this congregation. 1 am a bad man on earth this day; I am not a good man to the world or for man either. I will lift up strife this day
and it will not be put back. Peaoe will not be proclaimed or strife prevented by anyone. Peace will not be proclaimed till the earth shakes and man drops off. There will not bo a bright spot; all will be darkness. This house is full of spider webs. What I have said is known by all the prophets and wiso men. It is well known this word that has been said by Te Whiti. It is true the earth will shake and the sea will quiver ; the word is not false but true. This is the wisdom wo have been learning all this year. Never mind how small we are, our greatness and our smallness has been foretold. It is not the trouble that is making us small. The hand will be stretohed forth and the ocoupants of the land will be shaken off. The gates of Parihaka are open ; they will not be closed night or day. Now if these people will read (he point of the sword the door is open in front of us, and the man in front of us too. The lion's whelps are on the mountain top, they are crying out j their mouths are open and are shouting. Who oares for their shouting. Their neoks will be little, and they will be strung up no matter how the lions shout. Bring all your strength, bring all your guns this day ; there is nothing to keep it back. The door is open and there is none to shut the gates that will be open. The man that is come to kill is standing in front of us ; behind is the talk. This day there will be a large gathering. It will not be a small one. The horse riders will fall this day; all leaning against the shoulders of a horse will fall this day. If there were thousands at Pungarohu they would be all scattered.
