ANCIENT ORDER OF FORESTERS.
The quarterly meeting of the Canterbury United District A. OF. was held at the District Schoolroom, Sydenham, last Thursday evening, at half-past seven o’clock. Present —Bro. James Gapes, sen., D. 0.8-, in the chair; Bro. Bedford, D.S.C.B. ; Bro. H. Crooks, D.T. ; Bro. Thomas Gapes, D.S. Bro. Mummery, D.B. Delegate* Bros. Watt, P. 0.8, and Williams, P. 0.8., Court Star of Canterbury, Christchurch; Bro. Wm. Gibbons, P. 0.8., Court Queen of the Isles, Lyttelton ; Bro. Goo. F. White, P. 0.8. Court Pride of Courtenay, Courtenay ; Bro. D. Amos, 0.8., Court Star of Ashburton, Ashburton; Bro. F. P. Luce, P. 8., Court Thistle of the Forest, Sydenham; Bro. Woodford, P.D.0.8., Court Woodford, Kaiapoi; Bro. W. C. Fleming, Court Pride of Richmond, Bingsland. The correspondenceof last quarter was read. The D.B. gave a resume of opening two new conrta as branchessince the last meeting, one at Bingsland, which now number's thirty-five members, with several more proposed for initiation. Therapid progress of this Court is due to the energy of its officers, some of whom weremembers of Court 2309, but have joined the new court to further the objects of the order. Bro. Swann is the C.B. ; Bro. Rigan, B O.R. ; Bro. Davis, secretary, and Bro. Fleming, treasurer. The court at Papanui was opened on the 6ih inst., by the district officers at the Library, when sixteen persona were proposed for initiation, and were instructed in the forms and mysteries of theorder. Bros. Wilson and Moon were appointed Chief Banger and secretary respectively. At the next meeting several morecandidates will be initiated. Letters were received from Bro. Hunter, secretary Court Belle of the Isle. The district officers were authorised to act on same, and to get those members wishing it transferred into othercourts. Arrangements were made to provide laws for the government of new courts. Applications for five funeral donations have been received and paid by the district within the last quarter, viz. : —Court 6031, £2O, on death of one member; Court 2309 y £4O, one member and two members* wive* ; Court 2703, £2O, one member. It was suggested that all courts should, as soon o» possible, procure suitable funeral regalia. It is intended to order a banner for the district from England ; also, to get the opinion of courts as to the desirability of establishing a subsidiary High Court in New Zealand. After a deal of routine business had been disposed of—as amending laws, orders for good*, Ac.,—the D. 0.8. closed the meeting in due form, with thanks to the delegates for their punctuality and attendance. The next meeting, being for election of officers, &0., will bo held at the Foresters’ Hall, Christchurch, for the convenience of delegates and candidates.
