ElectoralMr Miohelson has finally decided to stand for Marsden. ShippingArrived —Bingarooma, BLENHEIM, October 17. ElectoralMr E. T. Connolly is a candidate for Picton, DUNEDIN, October 17. Fires. Two cottages at South Dunedin have been burned down. The insurances are £75 in the North British and £IOO in the Northern. The bush fires on the Peninsula on Friday are affirmed by the oldest settlers to be the severest known to them. Large areas of bush and miles of fencing and a number of buildings have been totally destroyed. The Harbor Cheese Factory, which was among the buildings burned, was insured in the Norwich Union for £l5O. Electoral. Mr Jago has declined to contest the Peninsula seat on account of business engagements. The Owake The Owake was insured in the National Office for £IOOO. Her crew consisted of a Mr Hardy (master), John Lang, Charles Close, A. M’Alpine, James Ramsay. Her cargo was wholly of coal.

SPORTING NOTES. By Sikbad. Mr McKellar informs me that Bribery has thrown a nice colt foal to Perkin Warbeok. Nomination* for the Wellington Oup close on Thursday, November 3rd. Sylvanus hag been purchased by Mr Ridd, of Wyndham, says the same writer, for 100 guineas, subject to certain conditions in favor of his previous owner. This colt is by the celebrated Australian horse Goldsbrough, and will be remembered as having last season won the Maiden Plate at the Oamaru Spring meeting; run at the Dunedin meeting second

in the City Stakes Handicap of 150 sots behind Hilarious; and second in the Queen’s Plate of 80 sots behind The Governor, beating Lady Emma and Nautilus. Mr Kidd has got a good horse at a reasonable price) and Sylvanus ehonid make his mark at stud duties in the southern districts. About thirty mares hare already been promised him. Mr Carter, of the Ashburton, informs me that Macsiccar and Miss Kate are to visit Oadogan. Old Sweetmeat to go to Totara, and Forget-me-Not to King of Clubs. The Ashburton Baoing Olub are, 1 hear, going to hold their annual meeting in the autumn, just previous to the Timaru fixture. I understand the programme will be an unusually liberal one, and that Mr E. G. Griffith will be requested to act as handioapper. Odd Trick, a eon of King of Clubs, is, I learn from Australian files, doing capital work I with Dowling at Ballarat. j Hilarious has been scratched for all his engagements at the forthcoming meeting. A telegram from England announces that Hopbloom has been purchased for Australia. The selection is a happy one, for Hopbloom is well bred, has a good record of performances, and must have been a very sound horse, otherwise he could «ot have run for so many years. He is by Parmesan from Cognisaunoe (full sister to the great English celebrities Lord Lyon and Achievement), by Stookwell from Paradigm, by Paragone. Hopbloom commenced his winning career as a two year-old in 1875, when he won the Two-year-old Stakes at Brighton, and he afterwards won a two year-old race at Shrewsbury. As a three year-old he was successful in the Bushes Handicap at Newmarket, and the Boyal Hunt Cup at Ascot, in which he defeated twenty-one opponents. As a four he triumphed in the Grand Stand Handicap at Carlisle, the Renfrewshire Handicap at Paisley, the Great Shropshire Handicap at Shrewsbury, and the Manchester Handicap at Manchester. As a five-year-old, he won the Queen’s Plate at Chester, and, as a six-year old, the Welter Handicap at Newmarket. Last year he was victorious in the Sandown Grand Prize, value £1391. It will be seen then that he has been a pretty good performer in the old country, and, being so fashionably bred, he must prove an acquisition to the breeding studs of Australia. I believe Mr Baldock was offered £IOOO for Wellington, and £IOO a year during the remainder of the horse’s life, but he refused it.

At the Northern Jockey Club Spring Meeting, in New South Wales, Sandwich's uncertain brother, Gipsy Cooper, has been distinguishing himself. He defeated six others in the N J.O. Handicap on the first day, and on the second won the Maitland Handicap and the Duokenfield Park Stakes. This last race was, it may be added, twice won by Laertes. By latest Melbourne files I learn that the New Zealand team are going well, and have been doing serviceable work. As far as the betting market is concerned Iphigenia has been backed for a big stake to win the Maribyrnong Plate. The following account of the belting market is from the “ Australasian''— Speculation has been the reverse of stagnant since last week. The Maribyrnong Plate has enabled the metallicians to ply their pencils pretty freely, for, in addition to the support awarded to Tangle, as reported in our last week’s town edition, Iphigenia, in Griffin’s stable, came in for plenty of support, her owner accepting all the available money at 100 to 4 and 100 to 5, and Gamin, a stable companion of Saionara, met with some attention at 100 to 4. Prince George, Sir Oliver, Fryingpan and Creme do Bouzy now and then have friends at 100 to 5, and at this price Satanella, who won the Sapling Stakes at Adelaide on Saturday, has been backed to win several thousands. The two favorites also meet with occasional support at 100 to 12 each. For the Derby, Somerset is very firm at 7 to 2, and as all the money at 5 to 1 about The Duke has been exhausted, 4 to lis the best offer against him. At Maryborough races the eon of King Cole was in great demand, and after several hundreds had been booked about him at 5 to 1, four fifties were accepted. Spinningdale may bo still quoted at 6 to 1, and the friends of Darebin take a point more about the big son of Durline. Duchess reigns supremo for the Melbourne Cup, and 100 to 14 is often booked, while Waxy’s admirers accept 100 to 8. The horse backed for most money this week has been Canary, whose owner took 10,000 to 300 about him, and would go on at the price. Waterloo, Sardonyx, Sir Modred, and Somerset all meet with support at 100 to 5, and Progress, Spinningdale, and Savanaka at 100 to 4 each. Trump Yoas has advanced a point for the Caulfield Cup, but the others remain at about the same price as they were last week.
