[better's telegrams.] LONDON, October 12, Mr Gladstone Speaks. In his speech at Guildhall to-day Mr Gladstone chose the opportunity to contradict the reports which have been current that there has been dissension in the Cabinet, and stated that perfect harmony prevailed among the members of the Ministry. In further allnsion to the arrest of Parnell, he said that this was one stop towards the strict enforcement of respect for the law. The Government, ho added, did not fear for the people of Ireland, and it was necessary to put a stop to the corruption and terrorism of professed agitators. In regard to the state of affairs in the Transvaal, Mr Gladstone stated that the Government were determined to abide by the terms of the convention agreed to between the Royal Commissioners and the Boer Triumvirate.
The Irish Agitator. Accounts to hand from Ireland state that Parnell was arrested at his hotel in Dublin, under the warrant of the Viceroy, issued in accordance with the provisions of the Coercion Act. He was conveyed to Kilmainham gaol, and will there bo be kept in custody. October 13, The Markets. Consols remain at 98|-. The total reserve in notes and bullion in the Bank of England is £9,875,000. The Bank rate of discount remains at 5 per cent.; market rate, 4£. New Zealand securities are without quotable change. There is no change to report in the market for Australian breadstnffs. A meeting of the Irish National Land League was held to-day, when Mr Dillon was appointed to replace Mr Parnell in the leadership. CALCUTTA, October 13. The Belligerent Tribes. Telegrams have been received from Afghanistan, announcing that another great battle has been fought between the forces of the Ameer and Ayoub Khan, resulting in the complete defeat of the latter. Further telegrams, moreover, report that the Ameer has since occupied Herat, and that Ayoub has fled to Persia, but this intelligence requires confirmation.
