Total, £471 17s Id. EJSGLISH. Mb Westgaeth, in hia circular of Aug. 26th. says : —The recent Australian and New Zealand advices are regarded here as fairly favorable. The brilliant account of the New South Wales 'finances gave great satisfaction, and the prodpact of a further loan from Victoria and a consolidation scheme of conversion for the short six per cent, debentures was not received unfavorably, but the talk of further borrowings by South Australia was severely criticised on account of her heavy loans daring the last few .years. Satisfaction was felt on reading the New Zealand reports, as the Government appears "to have a considerable portion of the last loan still unexpended During the past fortnight the money market has been seriously disturbed by a falling American exchange, and cansequent heavy shipments of gold to that quarter. Some large amounts have alto been withdrawn on Italian account. On the 10th, the Bank of England rate was raised to 3 per cent, but the withdrawals still continuing, a further advance to 4 per cent was made yesterday, 25th instant. This sudden advance in rates, coupled with the prospects of a bad harvest at home, haa caused largo sales of all aecuritioa to be effected. The chief fall has oocurred in the four per cent atocks of those colonies which have moat recently borrowed in the London Market. New South Wales, South Australia and Queensland fours have especially suffered. Victoria and New Zealand stocks also, but to a less serious extent.
