CHRIST'S COLLEGE ANNUAL SPORTS.

Judge, Mr 0. 0. Oorfe ; starters, Messrs E. A. Worthy and T. D. Oondell ; timekeepers, Messrs J. B. Harrison and B. J. Browning ; committee, W. Bridge, B. Dixon, H. S. Lee, H. H. Mathias, H. B. Mathias, W. P. Studholme. The annual sports in connection with Christ's College Grammar School were commenced at 10 o'clock this morning, when a programme comprising twenty- fonr items was submitted for competition. Tho weather was magnificent—a little too warm, perhaps. The large attendance of ladies and gentlemen evinced the growing interest taken in this gathering. Among the latter many old College boys, who hare now grown up to the sterner duties of life, were noticeable. Sport was initiated at 10 o'clock, as under: — Putting the Weight (161 b.). Open to the whole school. W. P. Btudholme (28ft. 6in.) ... 1 H.H. Lee(27ft. GJm.) 2 H. H. Mathias (27ft sin.) 3 Throwing the Cricket Ball. Open to the whole school. W. P. Studholme (88 yds. Ift ) ... 1 T. H. Lowry (86ydB. lft. 4in.) ... 2 Long Jump. Open to boys under 14. H. Bristol (14ft.) 1 A. Bolleston (13ft. 2£in.) 2 J. Hawkes also competed, and did well. Long Jump. Open to the whole school. H. H. Lee (18ft. Sin.) 1 W. P. Studholme (18ft.) 2 C. Mills and C. Strode also jumped well. High Jump. Open to boys under 14. H. Bristol (4ft.) 1 A. Bolleston (3ft. llin.) 2 K Temple also competed. High Jump, open to the whole school. W. P. Studholme (4ft lOin) ... 1 & I ttS£. }<*«■» .- Tied H. H. Lee was put out of it at the first jump, as he fell, hurting his foot somewhat. Mile Race, open to bays under 14. M. Bobison 1 A Perry 2 W. Cox, J. Hawkes, H. Stack, H. Fletcher, M. Archer and A. Bolleston also started. Bobison jumped off with the lead, which he maintained for a time, leading at the close of the first lap by twelve yards, but Fletoher shortly afterwards collared him, and was leading at the second lap by a yard. Shortly after Perry took charge, and led till just before getting into the straight, when Bobison came on with a rush, and, regaining his position, won cleverly, with thirty yards to spare. Time, smin. 37sec. Mile Bace, opsn to the whole school. H. H. Mathias 1 H. B. Mathias 2 T. Maude, W. Hall and A. H. Langdowu also ran. This was a capital race, but it was evident from the first that the victory lay between the brothers At the first lap Mathias 11. led by a little, but in the second lap Mathias primus took charge of affairs and was never headed. Langdown ran in good form, and gave Mathias 11. plenty of work to secure second honors. Time —smin. 7*sec. 100 Yards Race, open to boys under 11. M. Cuff 1 W. Wigley 2 W. M'Alpine and O. Hellish also ran. Time—l4£secs. 100 Yards Bace, open to boys under 14. M. Bobison 1 W. Hamilton 2 Twelve faoed Mr Worthy for this event, which was never in doubt. H. Bristol ran very gamely. Time—l2£secs. 100 Yards Kace ; open to the whole school (Mr Westenra's Cap.) H.H.Lee 1 J.D.Hall 2 Fourteen tried conclusions for this race, the brothers Studholme and L»ngdown being close up at the finish. Time —Usees. 100 Yards Bace, open to boys under 12. H.Weston 1 W. Harman 2 Four others ran, but Weston had it all his own way from start to fimsh. Time—l 4 seconds. Quarter Mile Race, open to boyß under 15. (Mr Gould's Cup.) In 1877 Mr Gould presented a cup for a quarter of a mile race, open to boys under fifteen. If any boy won this cup twice it became his property. It was won by A. Morgan. Mr Gould has accordingly given another for the same race. The following names are inscribed on it —J. Kewell, 1879; C. Torlesse, 1880. H. H. Miller 1 M. Stack 2 Ten competed for this prize, all starting in a duster, but after about 80 yards had been negotiated, Miller came out from the ruok, and cleverly won an oxciting raoe. Time — lmin ssec. Quarter Mile Bace, open to the whole school. G. Palmer 1 W. Studholme 2 Four ran. Palmer sprung off with the lead, and although Studholme ran well, the other was not to be denied, and won splendidly all the way. At this stage an adjournment was made to luncheon.
