[By Tkibseaph.] [Per 6.8. City of Now York, at Auckland.] MELBOURNE, October 6. Munificent aubieriptions continue to be made to the Cathedral building fund. The Hon. Henry Miller has given £SOOO, and Mr Joseph Clark a further £IOOO yearly for five years. Bishop Moorhouse has also given £IOOO. The Chinese Immigration Restriction Bill passed through committee on the 4th with only verbal alterations. Vessels are restricted to one Chinese per hundred tons. The Minister for Agriculture staf ed in the Assembly on the sth that the Government would probably let an experimental farm at Dookee to a number of gentlemen who are about to establish an agricultural college. In committee of the Assembly the Proteotion of Animals Bill passed with slight modification. At the same sitting it was agreed to put no motion for adjournment, unless supported by six members. The Yan Yean water supply accounts show a surplus of £48,000. The receipts for the year was over €104,000. Skilfully forged Crown grants, on which £BOO were advanced, were discovered on the Stb. Two miners were killed at Eagle Hawk. While the cage was descending the rope broke and the cage fell, the men being killed instantaneously. SYDNEY, October 6. The ship Hanrcah Dudley, which arrived at Sydney on the 4th, reports passing the ship Wairoa, bound from London to Wellington, on tbe 11th August, in latitude 40 deg. The Government steamer Ajax returned from Newcastle on the 4th, after searching for the abandoned barque Prince Victor. She reported finding a number of charred cedar ,ogs, portions of a topmast, and planks also burnt. There is little doubt but that the man left on board fired the ship in hopes of attracting attention, and perished. The enquiry into the Bandwick tramwsy collision resulted in finding the conductor and driver guilty of culpable neglect. Both were dismissed, and the fireman reduced to the rank of cleaner. BRISBANE, October 6. The Council has inserted a clause in the Police Bill, permitting the whipping of larrikins. There was an extensive fire at Bundabeng on the 4th. A number of houses were completely destroyed. The total loss was £87,000, mostly insured.
