[BY TKHBBBAPH.] (Ter Te Anau, at the Bluff.] MELBOURNE, September 29. On the resumption of the Budget debate, Mr Berry said it was not the intention of the Opposition to submit an adverse motion. He urged that the Government, if it does its duty, should scud up the beer and tobacco duties and an inoreased land tax in the same Bill, and defy the Council to rejeot it. Mr Murray Smith, while acquitting Mr Berry of being the cause of the reoent depression, said that his violent language and that of his colleagues deepened the gloom. The Supply Bill for £976,000 passed all its stages in both Houses on the evening of the 27th.
The following decision has been given in the Supreme Court in the will case of the late Mr James Blackwood, who left property in the other colonies and in New Zealand : tor was domiciled in "Victoria, he was liable to pay probate duty upon the whole of his personal property." It is, the intention of the Government, as 1 soon as possible, to appoint an Agent-General, but no name is yet mentioned. Colonel Faaley receives £ISOO a year while acting. A draper named Martin, residing in Simpson's road, Bichmond, attempted to murder his wife early on the morning of the 28th, but she escaped before he could effect his purpose, although dangerously injured. Martin committed suicide by cutting his throat. A testimonial, for presentation to Captain Baymond for rabbit extermination, is being raised. The amount has reached £lB5. The response, however, has been muoh less general than was anticipated. Mr Joseph Clarke has donated £IOOO to the Anglican Cathedral fund, and an anonymous correspondent of the "Argus" promises £SOOO if, by the end of the year, £25,000 be subscribed in various sums. This offer was made in response to the Bishop's urgent appeal. The proprietors of the "Argus" will issue an evening paper, called the "livening Mail," about the middle of next month.
The officers of Customs have reported against the proposal to extend the drawback regulations to imported wines, spirits, and ale.
Mr Oonway has received a letter from the organiser of the English eleven, giving the names of the team who visit Australia —Midwinter, Barlow, Pulling, Shrewsbury, Shaw, Uljett, Bates, Look wood, Feate, Selby, Lillywhite, Barnes. The defalcations of Agg amount to £2134, but the investigation is not yet oompleted. The Government hold a guarantee from an Assurance Company for £IOOO. Twenty-five commanders of steamer* and sailing vessels having experience of the navigation of the coast have expressed opinions in favor of lights being fixed on Capes Everard and Liptrop. At a meeting of American citizens it was resolved to wear crape on the left arm thirty days, and a message of condolenoe to Mrs Garfield be forwarded without delay. The smallpox scare in Victoria has proved groundless, there being only some harmless eruptions peouliar to infants. Odgers, the Under Treasurer, is seriously ill, and has been absent from duty five months.
The schooner Lark joins the Australian squadron for surveying duties. A hospital for contagious diseases is to be ereoted at Sandridge Bend, but the proposal meets with opposition from the residents in the vicinity. The rainfall for the year is olose upon six inohes below the average of the last twentythree years. Bain is much wanted all over the oountry. SYDNEY, September 29. Southcote, one of the patients in quarantine, has died. This makes the eighteenth death from smallpox. The Assembly yesterday went into committee to consider amendments by the Council on the Chinese Beduotion Bill. Sir Henry Parkes announces his intention that the Government should abandon the quarantining clause, which was agreed to without a division.
