[FEB PBKSS ASSOCIATION.] AUCKLAND, October 4. Fire. A flro at Ponsonby destroyed an eleven* roomed house, occupied by Gt. 0. Jakins, and an adjoining bouse, owned and occupied by Martelli. The insurances are : —Jakins, £7OO on the building and £3OO on the furniture, in the Boyal office ; Harris, £250 on the building and £2OO on the furniture, in the Boyal office. Martelli was uninsured. NEW PLYMOUTH, Ootober 4. The Reported Attack on DaniellsThe report telegraphed through the colony that the Native Minister was knocking about Bahotu on the very day that the attack was made by the Natives on Daniells is inoorreot, as Mr Bolleston was in Wellington at the time the occurrence is said to have taken place. KUMARA, October 4. Fatal .Accident A laborer named John Bobinson, who has been working at Jackson's, on the Ohrisiohurch road, asked the driver of a coach for a lift, and while crossing the Taipo river yesterday afternoon, Bobinson fell out on hie head and was drowned before his absence was notioed. The body was brought to Kumara where an icquest will be held to-day. WELLINGTON, October 4. Suicide. A man named John Johnson committed suicide on Friday by hanging himself in the bush near Greytown. Theatrical- " Les Oloohes do Oornevjlle" was performed by Gary's Opera Company last night to a crowded home. ElectoralMr Brandon, the member for the oountry distriots, will not seek re-election. Mr J. H. Shaw is a candidate for the Te Aro seat. OAMABU, October 4. Electoral' Mr Jonee announces that he will not Beok re-election. DUNEDIN, Ootober 4. Pedestrianism. The foot race for £SO aside, between De> laney and Hill, was won by the latter. The Effects of Drink A. Alexander was reoeived into the hoi* pi' U suffering from laudanum poisoning, taken while suffering from a drinking bout. The stomaoh pump was at once applied, and the man is now out of danger. The Case of AugustusAugustus, oharged with the manslaughter of his wife at Oamaru, was acquitted without any evidence being offered. At the outset Mr O'Meagher, prisoner's counsel, stated tbat when the deceased's depositions were taken she was in an unfit state to undergo cross- examination, and the completion of her oroBS-examination was adjourned, but before it could be oontinued the woman died. This was admitted by the Magistrate, and the Judge held that, under the circumstances, there was no case, and the jury returned a verdiot of " Not Guilty," as directed. Prisoner was then arraigned for sn essault with intent to inflict bodily harm, and pleaded "Guilty" to a common assault, which plea was accepted by the Crown proseoutor. In sentencing him, the Judge said the prisoner had been guilty of great brutality to the woman who had gone to her account. He was a man free of all common humanity and decency, and had the law permitto J it he (the learned Judge) would have given him a sentence five times as much as that he would now pass for common assault. The maximum penalty was a year's imprisonment with hard labor, to which he sentenced prisoner. FireA six-roomed house at Waverley, belonging to Arthur Finch, was burnt down early this morning, The house and contents were insured in the National Office for £550.
