A suggestion made eome time since in the House ot Commons, that assessed taxes should bo collected through the medium of the Post Office, is now being seriously considered by the Treasury. Last English files bring us the result of the Wingfield sculls. They carry with them the title ot Amateur Champion of the Thames. The contestants on this occasion dwindled down to two. Lownes, the winner, had twice rowed second for the same race, but this time he won very easily. It may bo mentioned that Mr J. B. Parker, an old Cantorbury resident, won the Wingfield Sculls when at Oxford. Ho made on this occasion an excellent time record.
A witty girl seeing a dapper little fop of her acquaintance with a large hat on—he affected large hats —sweetly said, “ Come out of that hat, William ; I know you are in it, for I see your feet.” A young lady of 22 refused to wed a man of 60, saying that ho was neither one thing nor another. Ho was too old for a husband and too young to hold out any hope of immediate widowhood.
A Philadelphia man has bought 4,000,000 acres of Florida land, and yet all this vast tract isn’t near as big as a boy feels in his first pair of high boots. It was a wise old French woman who once wrote: —“The world can give a woman boanty, costume, wealth, many charms, many allurement*; but race alone can give a woman three thing*—the hand, the glance, the voice.”
Charwoman —“ Please tell me, *ir, what I’m owing yo for yer visits.” Doctor —“ Oh. my good woman, never mind about that, I never make any charge* in *noh cases aa yours.” Charwoman (hesitatingly)—“ Thank ye, sir, kindly; but who’* to pay the chemist’s bill ? ” A couple of lawyer* engaged in a case were recently discussing the issue. “At all events,” said the younger and more enthusiastic, “ we have justice on our side.” To which the older and warier replied : “ Quite true ; bnt what we want is the Chief Justice oa oar side.”
