CUSTOMS DUTIES. .The following telegram from Mr Seed was roccivod by tho Collector of Customs, Christchurch, yesterday " The Onatoma and Excise Duties Act, loHl, comes into operation on and after the Ist October, 1881, the following changes of duty will then take effect ; ... „ “ Bacon and hams, 2d per lb; iron nails, 2a per owt; iron tanks of and under 200 gallons, 2a 6d each ; jams, jellies, marmalade, and preserves, Ijd per lb ; maize, 9d per 1001 b; maizena and cornflour, Is the 1001 b ; soap, scented and •fancy, 25 per cent, ad valorem; woolpaoks of the kind known as * woolpookets,’ and not exceeding the measmement of 18 x 21 s 30 inches, 3-i3d the dozen. “ The following articles are free of duty ; Alum, axes and hatchets, borox ; calicoes, white and grey, in the piece; carriage materials, viz.: American cloth, shafts, spokes, felloes, naves, tacks, chaff, cheese cloth, colored cotton shirtings in the piece, corduroy (cotton) in the piece, cotton dress prints, (navy blue or other similar description of cotton piece goods), gold size, hessian bags, iron wire netting, moleskin in the piece, nitric acid, rough brown bolland in the piece, sewing cotton, silks and threads, spades, shovels and forks, tailors’ trimmings, viz.—black and brown canvas, silesians, verona, Italian cloth, flexible coat and vest metal and bone battens, silk, worsted, cotton, bindings and braids. “ Section 4 of the Customs Tariff Act, 1880, ia repealed.”
